General Purpose

DEFINITION:  Under the supervision of the Public Services Librarian perform shelving and other library collection maintenance work, serving library users indirectly.  This position is for 10 Scheduled Hours per week.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

DUTIES/EXAMPLES OF WORK

  1. Shelving returned library materials, filling/emptying/organizing book carts.
  2. Retrieve books from shelves to be sent to other libraries (“pick list”).
  3. Assist with other collection maintenance tasks such as weeding and shifting.
  4. Processing new or donated library materials.
  5. Mending/repair of library materials. 
  6. Regularly communicate with supervisor to discuss plans, share information, and receive direction.
  7. Other duties as assigned, may include checking in items, processing hold items, shelf-reading, and light cleaning. 

Qualifications

  1. Knowledge of library methods, policies, and procedures and the ability to apply them to 
  2. Library operations; knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and the public and maintain good public relations. 
  4. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers, and supervisors.
  5. Knowledge of computers and peripherals, keyboarding, and skill in the use of other equipment such as telephone, fax machine, copy machine, calculator, general office equipment, and filing.
  6. Ability to work independently, organize and prioritize work, respond to varied/changing work demands and make decisions as appropriate.             
  7. Willingness to maintain skills in above-mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate continuing education activities.
  8. Working knowledge of English grammar and spelling. Knowledge of Spanish helpful.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE POSITION
  1. Sitting, standing, walking, climbing and stooping.
  2. Bending/twisting and reaching.
  3. Talking and hearing; use of telephone.
  4. Far vision at 20 feet or further; near vision at 20 inches or less; use of computers
  5. Lifting and carrying: 50 pounds or less.
  6. Handling, processing, picking up and shelving library materials.
  7. Fingering: keyboarding, writing, filing, sorting, shelving and processing.
  8. Pushing and pulling: objects weighing up to 250 pounds on wheels.
  9. Ability to work in confined spaces.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Communication Skills: Effectively communicate ideas in both written and oral form. 
  2. Reading Ability: Effectively read and understand information contained in emails, memos, reports, bulletins, etc.
  3. Mathematical Ability: Calculate basic arithmetic problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) without the aid of a calculator.
  4. Ability to Comprehend and Follow Instructions: Effectively follow verbal and written instructions from supervisor and interpret technical procedures and instructions.
  5. Time Management: Set priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines.
  6. Ability to work effectively in a constantly changing environment.
