Library Managers are responsible for coordinating, planning, directing, supervising, and evaluating the activities, spaces, and staff for departments and branches of the library system. Library Managers use professional knowledge and skills to guide staff, and provide and promote excellent library service to customers throughout the County. 
 

Essential Duties

1. Ensure the efficient day-to-day operations of department or branch(es)
  1. Schedule and assign the work of direct reports
  2. Provide training for employees to effectively complete their work assignments and stay current on new technologies and trends in libraries
  3. Monitor, coach, and evaluate performance of staff
  4. Communicate regularly with staff in a variety of ways, including planning and conducting  regular staff meetings as well as individual updates
  5. Ensure staff understand, participate in, and champion the Library's mission, strategic direction, and values
  6. Work with Administration to hire, discipline, and terminate direct reports as appropriate
  7. Participate in all department duties as necessary to provide and model excellent customer service
  8. Research, plan, implement and promote the programs and services offered by branches or departments in alignment with Brown County Library standards, and guide staff to do the same
  9. Maintain library collections by working with the Collection Development Manager and appropriate selectors
  10. Plan space and amenities within department/branch to meet the needs of customers and align with system standards
  11. Oversight of  accurate cash handling and creating deposits, and other financial responsibilities for the branch or department
2. Model appropriate skills for staff to assist customers with using the Library
  1. Meet customers' needs for information by answering questions and locating appropriate library resources
  2. Recommend books and other resources and services based on customer preferences and knowledge of the collection
  3. Provide help with library technology such as public computers, the library catalog, and digital resources
  4. Use library circulation system to check materials in and out, and perform customer service for library  patrons
3. Develop and implement Brown County Library-wide initiatives
  1. Attend Library meetings and training to maintain knowledge base
  2. Compile information for assigned operational reports
  3. Analyze data to evaluate the success of programs and services
  4. Lead Brown County Library-wide services such as, research and information services, youth services, adult and senior services, staff training, and circulation
  5. Recommend appropriate branch or department staffing levels
  6. Develop programs and/or services eligible for grant funding, and work with Administration to write and submit grant applications
  7. Plan, prepare, and implement grant programs with Administrative oversight
  8. Develop internal procedures, and ensure compliance with Brown County Library standards and policies
  9. Prepare and submit Brown County Library budget requests and Friends of the Brown County Library funding requests for departments or branches
4. Build and maintain community relationships through networking and outreach
  1. Strengthen community contacts, relating library objectives and services that meet community needs
  2. Act as a liaison to community groups and organizations to build partnerships that extend library services through that group
  3. Speak publicly as an expert in a subject area or about library services
  4. Work with community organizations to provide services or programming that meet customer needs
  5. Contribute to and participate in professional activity at the local, state, and national levels

Minimum Qualifications Required

Education and Experience
A master's degree in Library Science/Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university, plus two years of professional library experience; or a bachelor's degree plus five years of professional library experience; or any equivalent combination of training, education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
 
Licenses and Certifications
Valid Wisconsin Driver's License

  3. Ability to hire, train, supervise, evaluate, and discipline employees
  4. Effectively administer and interpret Brown County Library policies and procedures

  6. Detailed knowledge of public library principles, practices and techniques
  7. Assess users' needs and provide consistently exceptional customer service
  8. Complete closing duties, including clearing and securing the building
  9. Identify problems and take action to develop appropriate solutions or refer to Administration when necessary
  10. Make presentations to varying sized groups of youth and adults
  11. Effectively coordinate and direct the work of others
  12. Maintain a calm demeanor under stressful or unsettling circumstances
  13. Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
  14. Represent the Library in a responsible, professional and trustworthy manner
  15. Establish and maintain cooperative and courteous working relationships with staff and a diverse customer base
  16. Work independently with minimal supervision
  17. Appropriately multitask and prioritize
  18. Work efficiently while paying close attention to detail
  19. Follow detailed verbal and written instructions
  20. Meet the flexible scheduling needs of the Library
  21. Adapt to changes in the work environment
  22. Effectively use general office equipment and software, including but not limited to, computer, printer, photocopier, telephone, cash drawer, audio-visual equipment, word processing, and email
  23. Demonstrate proficient technology skills, including but not limited to, working with the library specific software and databases, and efficient use of Automated Materials Handling system
