Position Description

This Library Manager 3 is a Civil Service position located at Nashville Public Library. Position performs supervisory and administrative duties. When located in Branch Services the position oversees the daily operations of a large 20-25,000 sq. ft. library branch and may oversee multiple community library branches. When located at the Main Library this position oversees the daily operations of a system-wide function in a major area of the division.

Typical Duties

  • Supervises direct report employees at a large area branch or division and the supervisors at the selected community branch libraries or divisions.
  • Schedules work hours to ensure that all public areas are covered.
  • Evaluates employees, counsels with and disciplines employees as needed, and approves leave requests.
  • Performs difficult or complex professional work in his/her area.
  • Develops and maintains library materials collections.
  • Assesses staffing and physical resource needs of their area.
  • Works with administrative staff to prepare the budget. 
  • Provides Reference and Reader’s Advisory service to the public.
  • Receives and resolves complaints from the public.
  • Performs administrative duties, writes reports and performs statistical analyses.
  • Plans programs and activities.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Promotes programs and services for the library in the community.
  • Keeps abreast of new trends in Library and Information Science.
  • Adheres to library Customer Service Guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Master’s in Library Science or Master’s in a Library Science field, degrees must be accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of professional library experience, including three (3) years of supervisory experience.
