Job Summary

The Library Director manages, directs, and provides leadership for the administration, finances, and efficient operation of all aspects of the South Burlington Public Library. The Director leads efforts to ensure that all feel welcome and included in all services and programs offered by the Library.  This work includes supervising and leading staff, developing and implementing policies and procedures, strategizing, planning and implementing innovative programs for all South Burlington residents, and planning of initiatives and community outreach strategies that align with the goals and objectives of the City. This position assesses and monitors community needs, identifies opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures and establishes and builds relationships with community partners. Administrative functions of this position include budget creation and management of resources including setting strategies and priorities. As a Department Head, this position is a member of the City Manager’s Leadership Team.

Examples of Duties

  1. Directs and manages all aspects of library administration and operations.
  2. Engages the public and promotes the library and its programs in the community.
  3. Ensures that all community members see themselves reflected in the collections and services of the library. Lead efforts to eliminate barriers that limit access to programs, services, and collections 
  4. Supports library union and non-union employees in all aspects of performing their jobs, including providing constructive feedback, evaluating performance, and orienting and training employees to maximize the performance and quality of staff and services.
  5. Operates and manages automated catalog and online  databases in a networked system.
  6. Oversees community internet access services and other new technologies to enhance library services.
  7. Develops and manages annual budget in collaboration with the City Manager, Library Trustees, and city personnel as necessary.
  8. Maintains and seeks to expand the library collection including ordering and processing new books and other materials.
  9. Serves as liaison to the Library Board of Trustees and collaborates with the Foundation and the Friends of the Library
  10. Conducts short and long-term library planning in collaboration with the City Manager, Library Trustees, City Council, and the community.
  11. Responds to inquiries from the public, providing information and making referrals as necessary.
  12. Supports the coordination of activities between all the staff and other departments within the City and performs other necessary tasks or functions as is necessary to accomplish City and Department goals and objectives.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in library science or a related field required; A minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience in library planning and management, five of which must have been in a supervisory role, preferably in a municipal setting, required. An equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered.
  2. Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution preferred.

  1. Broad-based technical knowledge and skills in current library principles and practices, professional library policies, library rules and regulations, as well as methods and techniques including such areas as general knowledge of and ability to use reference tools, classification, cataloging, acquisition, circulation, adult books, and materials.
  2. Strong planning, administrative, personnel and budget management skills.
  3. Demonstrated ability to prepare and manage budgets, maintain detailed records and related confidential information such as personnel records.
  4. Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interact respectfully and successfully with patrons, including students of varying ages, members of the public, City and School personnel, Trustees, and various outside organizations. This includes strong skills in de-escalation techniques.
  6. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
