Position Overview

The Cumberland County Library, a department of county government, invites passionate and service-minded individuals to join a team dedicated to serving our community. This position helps connect residents to informational and recreational materials in a variety of formats while supporting innovative programs and services that make a real difference. You’ll provide friendly, knowledgeable assistance at multiple service points and use independent judgment to guide customers to the resources they need. In some locations, you may also serve as a Team Lead, helping support daily operations and inspire excellent customer service.

Examples of Duties

  • Assists customers of all ages in person, by phone, virtually, and at public service desks where information and readers’ advisory services are provided
  • Orients and instructs customers in developing effective search strategies to locate needed information
  • Trains customers in the use of search techniques, including keyword, browsing, and Boolean searching
  • Assists customers with library information and technology resources
  • Performs basic troubleshooting of library equipment and trains others in the use of library resources and equipment
  • Provides one-on-one instruction and readers’ advisory services to customers
  • Promotes library programs, services, and resources to the public
  • Plans, coordinates, and presents age-appropriate in-person and virtual programs for customers from birth through age 18 under the direction of a librarian
  • Delivers programs and services both inside and outside the library, supporting outreach and community engagement

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and two (2) years of relevant public library experience or progressive customer relations experience in the public sector; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Management Preference: Experience in working with children and young adults preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of providing library services, including circulation, reference services, and cataloging
  • Knowledge of library terminology and related professional language used within the Department
  • Knowledge of library standards relevant to essential duties and work responsibilities
  • Knowledge of the organization of the Department and of related departments and agencies
  • Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of Cumberland County as they relate to assigned duties
  • Ability to develop and present programs for specific age groups as assigned
  • Ability to maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with intra- and interdepartmental personnel

In accordance with Session Law 2025-16, candidates selected for positions involving work with children in any capacity will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).

Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment. Refusal to submit to testing or testing positive for prohibited substances will result in the withdrawal of the conditional employment offer.
