As a Library Associate, you will play an important role in serving the citizens of Cumberland County and surrounding communities by providing outstanding customer service and helping patrons access informational and recreational resources in a variety of formats. This position offers the opportunity to assist customers with materials selection, technology, and library services while using independent judgment in a fast-paced and welcoming environment. Library Associates also support dynamic programs and community initiatives that inspire lifelong learning and engagement for all ages. In some locations, this role may also serve as a Team Lead, helping guide daily operations and support a positive customer experience.
Assists library customers of all ages in person, by phone, and virtually, providing information and readers’ advisory services at various public service points under the direction of a librarian
Instructs and orients the public in effective search strategies to locate information, including keyword, browsing, and Boolean searching techniques
Provides guidance and support to customers in using library information systems, digital tools, and technology resources
Performs basic troubleshooting of library equipment and assists customers with resolving common technical issues
Delivers one-on-one instruction to help customers effectively navigate library resources and services
Provides readers’ advisory services to assist customers in selecting materials that meet their interests and needs
Promotes library programs, services, and resources to encourage community engagement and usage
Plans, coordinates, and presents age-appropriate programs for children and teens (birth through age 18), both in-person and virtually, under librarian supervision
Supports library outreach efforts by delivering programs and services within the library and in the community as assigned
Assists in training customers and staff on the use of library resources, tools, and equipment to enhance service delivery
Knowledge of the principles and practices of library services, including circulation of materials, reference services, and cataloging functions
Knowledge of library terminology and professional language commonly used within library operations and services
Knowledge of Cumberland County policies, procedures, and methods as they relate to essential job duties and responsibilities
Knowledge of library standards and best practices applicable to daily operations and service delivery
Knowledge of the organizational structure of the department and its relationship to other county departments and external agencies
Skill in developing, planning, and presenting engaging programs for library customers of all ages
Skill in applying library service principles to effectively assist customers with circulation, reference, and cataloging-related needs.
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and standards in carrying out assigned duties
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with intra- and interdepartmental personnel, as well as the public
