The Library Associate performs clerical and paraprofessional library work in providing programming, reference, and outreach activities in the youth services department of the Perry Memorial Library serving Vance County and the City of Henderson. An employee in this class performs paraprofessional library work assisting the librarians to provide programs and services in the youth services department of the public library. Work also includes operating the bookmobile and outreach vehicle to deliver materials and programming to various locations in Vance County. Work requires considerable knowledge of the collections in assigned area, a working knowledge of computer software used in typical office environments, email, and the internet and for learning activities from early childhood through adult. Initiative, tact and diplomacy are required in providing a variety of services to patrons. Weekend and evening hours are required.
Position is responsible for working at the Youth Services desk to provide direction and instruction to patrons. The position is also responsible for outreach activities to youth (0 to 18) in the Vance County community through materials delivery and programming. This position will report to the Youth Services Librarian but also coordinate with the Outreach Librarian on appropriate outreach activities. This position will also collaborate with other organizations in the community that serve area youth.
Education and Experience:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of related experience supplemented by college level course work, experience with office computers, and considerable experience in library work, preferably in assigned area, and assisting patrons; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Special Requirements:
Hours are 9:45am-6:15pm Monday and Wednesday-Friday, 11:45am-8:15pm Tuesday, and one weekend per month.
Must be proficient in operating bookmobile (CDL not required).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs. Knowledge of books, materials and resources in area of assignment and working knowledge of the remainder of the library’s collection. Knowledge of the Perry Library policies and procedures. Skill in providing reference services as requested in area of assignment. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the widely varying patron demographic groups and their special needs. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and coworkers, volunteers, library patrons and the general public. Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Tasks may require the following abilities: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuityto operate a computer terminal, inspect library materials, and do extensive reading.
