Are you ready to work where you can make a difference in people’s lives every day? The Bastrop Public Library is looking for a dynamic, energetic, helpful, people-loving individual to join our team as a Library Assistant Public Services, Part-Time. This part-time position’s primary function is direct interaction with the public, using a computer, and providing assistance at our customer service desks. Some Saturdays and evening hours are required.

  • Works Circulation Desk, including, but not limited to, checking materials in and out, maintaining patron registration, answering telephones, directing patrons, and assisting with requests for materials, reserves, and inter-library loans.
  • Provides Information Desk Services to assist patrons with information needs, including, but not limited to, performing on-line database and Internet searches, instructing patrons in the use of electronic and traditional resources, and assisting with computers and electronic devices.
  • Assists patrons with requests for books and materials, electronic resources, and other information sources; instructs patrons in the use of various library equipment. 
  • Performs various moderately complex and technical library functions, i.e., shelving, inventory, weeding, locating missing materials, notifying patrons of overdue and reserve materials, reconciling petty cash, and compiling statistics.
  • Maintains orderly appearance of facility by clearing tables of books and magazines, replacing tables, chairs, and other materials periodically, and dusting shelves and desks.
  • Assists other Library staff with presenting various library programs, selecting resources, preparing materials, and preparing the library and meeting rooms for activities and programs.
  • Work schedule includes non-standard weekday hours and required Saturdays.  Occasional hours outside of this schedule may be required for special events or outreach activities.
  • Leave scheduled should be managed so as to not interfere with ability to accomplish tasks, including special projects and assignments with deadlines.

  • Performs related work as directed.
  • Participates in Emergency Management Operations as directed.
  • May be required to work holidays, weekends, or after hours as directed.

REQUIREMENTS
A. Training and Experience

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish proficiently. 
  • College level course work that supports the field of library science.
  • One (1) to three (3) years progressively responsible customer service 

B. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current technology, basic computer skills., internet and database searching.
  • Ability to serve the public with patience, tact, and integrity.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Ability to utilize a variety of office equipment, computer software,
  • Ability to read numbers and letters rapidly and accurately, sort and file alphabetically, numerically, and according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
  • Ability to communicate effectively; receive both oral and written instructions; listen actively to coworkers and the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.
  • Ability to work days, evenings, and weekends.

CPhysical Requirements   
This is primarily an office classification where sitting, standing in work areas and walking between work areas is required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Positions in this classification regularly bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull to retrieve supplies, files, and other materials. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull book carts, materials, and objects weighing up to 50 pounds. 

Employees primarily work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances.  Some tasks may require exposure to dust, pollen, or outdoor environments. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
