Position Overview

Join a dynamic and community-focused library system dedicated to serving the residents of Cumberland County and surrounding areas. In this role, you’ll help connect customers with a wide range of informational and recreational resources while supporting innovative programs that enrich the community. You’ll provide excellent service at multiple service points, using your judgment to guide patrons in finding materials and information that meet their needs. This position offers the opportunity to take on leadership responsibilities, including serving as a Team Lead at select locations. Examples of Duties

  • Staffs public service points to provide assistance to library customers

  • Performs proactive reference services at the service desk to support patron needs

  • Assists customers with locating information and using library resources

  • Provides support with technology, including computers and digital tools

  • Performs basic troubleshooting of library equipment

  • Trains customers and staff on the use of library resources and equipment

  • Assists with self-checkout services and manages customer account inquiries at the Circulation desk

  • Processes transactions including cash, check, and online credit card payments

  • May retrieve change from the bank for use in change machines and cash registers

  • Participates in collection maintenance activities, including weeding and discarding materials under general supervision

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and two (2) years of relevant public library experience or progressive customer relations experience in the public sector; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of library procedures, collection management, systems, and services

  • Knowledge of readers’ advisory methods and available resources

  • Knowledge of library card registration requirements and processes

  • Skill in providing effective customer service and delivering library information services

  • Skill in communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff and the public

  • Skill in searching and navigating the online public access catalog (OPAC) and other digital resources

  • Ability to instruct customers in the use of library equipment, including photocopiers, fax machines, card dispensers, public computers, and self-checkout systems

  • Ability to use computers proficiently, including accurate keyboarding and basic software functions

  • Ability to operate audiovisual equipment and access online databases and internet resources

  • Ability to perform basic troubleshooting on computers, printers, copiers, and fax machines

  • Ability to organize work, prioritize tasks, and coordinate activities effectively

  • Ability to interact tactfully and courteously with a diverse public

In accordance with Session Law 2025-16, candidates selected for positions involving work with children in any capacity will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
