Position Overview

This Library Associate position offers the opportunity to connect customers with a wide range of informational and recreational materials while supporting innovative programs and services that enrich the community. You will provide welcoming, knowledgeable assistance at multiple service points, using independent judgment to help customers discover resources that meet their needs. At select locations, this position may also serve as a Team Lead, offering leadership support and helping ensure exceptional service delivery. Examples of Duties

  • Staffs a public services point, providing assistance to library patrons
  • Performs proactive reference at the service desk to answer questions and guide users
  • Assists customers with locating and using information and technology resources
  • Performs basic troubleshooting of library equipment to ensure smooth operation
  • Trains customers and staff in the use of library resources and equipment
  • Assists customers with self-service checkout and account management at the Circulation desk
  • Handles cash, check, and supports patrons with online credit card transactions
  • May go to the bank to pick up change for the change machine and/or cash register

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and two (2) years of relevant public library experience or progressive customer relations experience in the public sector; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of library procedures, collection management, library systems, and services
  • Knowledge of readers’ advisory methods and sources
  • Knowledge of library card registration requirements
  • Skill in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, with co-workers and the general public
  • Skill in searching the online public catalog (OPAC) proficiently
  • Ability to provide library information services and other customer assistance
  • Ability to instruct customers in the use of equipment, including photocopiers, fax machines, Venda card dispensers, public computer reservation software, and self-checkout systems as needed
  • Ability to use computers, manipulate the keyboard competently, and spell accurately
  • Ability to operate audiovisual equipment, online public catalogs, and navigate the Internet and specialized library databases to locate information
  • Ability to perform basic troubleshooting on computers, printers, copiers, and fax machines
  • Ability to organize work and coordinate activities effectively
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public

In accordance with Session Law 2025-16, candidates selected for positions involving work with children in any capacity will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).

Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment. Refusal to submit to testing or testing positive for prohibited substances will result in the withdrawal of the conditional employment offer.
