Major Functions
The County of Volusia is seeking a Library Associate for the Edgewater Public Library, Florida. This position serves as Circulation Section Manager in a full-size community branch. Directly supervises two library assistants, student workers, and volunteers. Spends at least 50% of time in direct public service at the public service desk, assisting in the stacks and planning and presenting adult programs. Is responsible for collection maintenance including shelving, check-in and check-out, reservation pick lists and processing incoming new materials. Serves as the person-in-charge for designated shifts. Works assigned days at the Oak Hill Public Library.

Illustrative Duties

- Provides front-line, telephone, and/or electronic service to the Public.
- May serve as the Volunteer Coordinator for assigned branch and coordinates volunteer activities such as scheduling, assigning, training and recognizing the volunteer work force.
- Ensures that County policies and procedures are followed; explains and interprets policies to patrons; takes complaints and handles appropriately; assists in developing improved procedures.
- Ensures assigned area or specialized unit is well-stocked and supervises supply usage and coordinates reordering.
- Ensures that assigned area or specialized unit is prepared for library opening.
- Uses the integrated library system software, online databases, the Internet, electronic catalog, and may assist with maintenance of library equipment software or hardware.
- May prepare, monitor, update, and approve employee schedules and work time in the County's electronic payroll system.
- Attends workshops and meetings as required.
- Perform work of lower-level library classifications and related work as required.
SPECIALIZED ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES INCLUDE:
Circulation Area: Directs and supervises automated circulation and materials processing; maintains circulation overdue records; trains, directs, supervises, and evaluates staff, volunteers, community service workers, etc. in customer service, shelving, book processing procedures, or other related library functions; ensures the smooth operation of circulation desk functions; participates in outreach or other off-premises library-related events; prepares and submits statistical reports as scheduled or assigned; coordinates meeting room schedules for in-house events and public usage; keeps track of fines and fees, sets register drawers, prepares deposits; to be cross-trained in all applicable areas for assignment as needed; performs any/all duties related to circulation, etc.
Minimum Requirements
High School Diploma or GED and four (4) years of library experience.
OR
Associate's degree (AA) and two (2) years of library experience.
OR
Bachelor's degree (BA) in Liberal Arts, English, or related field.
A comparable amount of education, training and experience may substitute for the minimum requirements.
Having met the minimum requirements, the preferred candidate will have a Bachelor's degree (BA) in Liberal Arts, English, or related field and at least two (2) years of experience working in the circulation section.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of library circulation, reference, and/or children's procedures.
- Knowledge of Dewey Decimal System. Knowledge of library material classifications.
- Customer service skills.
- Skill in operating the library's automated system and other relevant computer operations (i.e. – the Internet, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher).
- Ability to supervise, manage and evaluate subordinates effectively.
- Ability to prepare statistical and other reports. Ability to employ appropriate policies and procedures and to explain and interpret them to others.
- Ability to make independent decisions and use judgment on routine and non-routine matters.
- Ability to oversee and ensure the proper operation of the library function.
- Ability to develop methods for improvement of operations.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with administration, supervisors, staff, volunteers, and patrons.
- Ability to perform basic to moderate mathematical computations including cash-handling techniques and preparation of moderate to large sum deposits.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation.
- Performs work of lower-level library classifications and related work as required.
ADA REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Demands: Medium, repetitive work. Ability to see, hear and listen, talk; detailed finger dexterity (including grasping and small tool manipulation), may require visually acuity for fine print. Ability to lift and push 25+ pounds, carry, bend, reach, kneel, crouch, stretch, twist, and climb. Ability to stand for long periods of time.
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend professional and technical manuals, procedures and journals; memos, policies, safety instructions. Ability to adequately write evaluations, memos, summaries, reports, or other modes of correspondence. Ability to speak clearly and concisely relating information, details, and procedures to layman. Ability to perform basic mathematical and monetary functions.
