Position Overview

In this role as a Library Associate in Adult Services, you will deliver exceptional customer service while assisting patrons with materials, technology, and informational needs across multiple service areas. Examples of Duties

  • Provide friendly, professional, and responsive customer service to library patrons in person, by phone, and through digital communication channels

  • Staff public service desks and assist customers with locating materials, accessing information, and using library resources

  • Answer patron inquiries and provide guidance on library services, policies, and available community resources

  • Assist customers with the use of library technology, including desktop computers, laptops, printers, scanners, fax machines, e-readers, and software applications

  • Provide basic troubleshooting and technical support for library equipment and technology-related issues

  • Deliver instruction and one-on-one assistance to patrons on digital literacy skills, online resources, and research tools

  • Support and promote library programs, events, and services designed for adult audiences and the community

  • Assist with planning, coordinating, and implementing workshops, lectures, book clubs, and other educational or recreational programs

  • Create a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages lifelong learning and community engagement

  • Work collaboratively with library staff to ensure efficient daily operations and high-quality public service

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and two (2) years of relevant public library experience or progressive customer relations experience in the public sector; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of library procedures, collection management practices, library systems, and public library services
  • Knowledge of readers’ advisory methods, resources, and techniques to assist patrons with material selection

  • Skill in operating computers and audiovisual equipment, including accurate keyboarding and data entry

  • Skill in providing exceptional customer service and delivering accurate library information services to a diverse population

  • Skill in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, with customers, staff, and community members

  • Ability to instruct patrons in the use of library equipment, including photocopiers, fax machines, payment systems, public computer reservation software, and self-checkout equipment

  • Ability to proficiently search and navigate the online public access catalog (OPAC), Internet resources, and specialized library databases

  • Ability to perform basic troubleshooting for computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, and other library technology

  • Ability to organize work, coordinate activities, and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to interact tactfully, courteously, and professionally with the public while fostering a welcoming library environment

In accordance with Session Law 2025-16, candidates selected for positions involving work with children in any capacity will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).

Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment. Refusal to submit to testing or testing positive for prohibited substances will result in the withdrawal of the conditional employment offer.
