Nature of Work

The purpose of the class is to provide basic library services primarily for youth.  The class is responsible for assisting patrons with reference searches, general library services, assisting with library projects, and specialized functions. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.  

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists patrons with selecting and locating library materials and general library information in the Youth Services Department, both at the Children’s desk and in the Teen Room.
  • Assists patrons in the use of computers, printing, and personal devices.
  • Assists with the maintenance of the youth collection that may include, but is not limited to: weeding, recommendations, shelf reading, and shelving of materials.
  • Assists in the orientation and training of department employees and volunteers under the supervision of the Youth Services Supervisor.
  • Plans, prepares, and maintains library displays, bulletin boards and decorations in cooperation with other staff members in the Youth Services department.
  • Designs and prepares promotional flyers and related marketing materials for Youth Services programs under the supervision of the Youth Services Supervisor.
  • May perform specialized library functions such as planning, implementing and presenting youth programs, virtual and in-person, both as part of a team and independently, under the supervision of the Youth Services Supervisor.  This may include video gaming programs for youth. 
  • May perform specialized library functions related to outreach activities that include the planning, preparing and presenting of story times at childcare centers and preschools under the supervision of the Youth Services Supervisor.  
  • May be asked to maintain current community contact list for outreach purposes.  
  • Maintains accurate statistical records as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patron information. 

Minimum Requirements

Requires a high school diploma or GED.  Requires experience with youth in a library organization or other related field. This class must be able to guide others, making frequent decisions, affecting the individual, coworkers, library patrons, and others that depend on the service or product. Strong computer and internet skills required. Strong oral and written communication skills required. Proficiency in video gaming systems required. Proficiency in audio/video production preferred. Working knowledge of social media platforms, e.g. Facebook, Instagram, etc. preferred. 

Must be able to work evenings and some Saturdays. 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATES:
Requires a valid State of Florida Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.
