Job Description



This is an exempt position responsible for supervising pages, page clerks, and section volunteers; and managing operations related to: checking in, routing, shelving material and maintaining order of library collections. Position also helps oversee technical services functions for the library. Evening and weekend work is required. Work is supervised by the Materials Management Supervisor.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Provide first-line supervision of Returns services including check-in, Automated Materials Handling (AMH) system functions, title paging, routing items, and shelving materials
• Be able to perform the work of Materials Management staff and provide backup
• Schedule and train library pages, page clerks, and shelving volunteers
• Contribute to hiring processes and goal setting for Materials Management; provide ongoing feedback and written annual evaluations for Returns staff
• Aid Materials Management Supervisor in managing workflow and training for entire Materials Management team
• Develop and maintain procedures for check-in, routing, shelving, and holds processing; maintain written procedures on library intranet
• Serve as section expert in ILS software, specifically those aspects used by Returns, including leading training for Returns staff
• Oversee AMH functions of RFID system; train staff in its use; maintain working relationship with AMH vendor representatives; schedule annual maintenance visits; and work cooperatively with library and vendor colleagues to identify and resolve problems
• Develop and manage collection maintenance projects in consultation with Materials Management Supervisor such as shelf-reading, shifting, weeding, and inventories, etc. using ILS collection reports, established condition standards, and discarded materials policies
• Lead and contribute to section and committee meetings
• Assist in the implementation of section services and library goals & objectives
• Interpret library policies, procedures, rules and regulations to the public and section staff
• Cooperate with staff in other library sections, other OWLSnet libraries, and the city
• Maintain regular punctual and predictable attendance

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

• Coordinate continuing education of page and page clerk staff
• Recommend changes or new procedures in order to increase workflow efficiencies and improve service delivery
• Represent Materials Management concerns at library, system and network meetings, as needed

Typical Qualifications

A bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

• Knowledge of general library services and practices
• Effective and courteous oral and written communication skills
• Working knowledge of electronic services, Internet tools, social media and library related technology and trends.
• Proficiency with MS Office Suite and able to quickly adapt and learn new software as library requires
• Ability to learn the details of the OWLSnet ILS software and train personnel to use it
• Ability to learn components of Automated Materials Handling and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and train personnel to use it
• Supervisory experience, including training and evaluating staff
• Ability to apply wage and hour laws and city and library policies to work
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to work as a team member, maintaining effective relationships with co-workers
• Ability to stand and walk for several hours at a time
• Ability to lift at least 30 lbs.; push a loaded book cart (200 lbs.) on carpeting
• Ability to read fine print (font sizes of 8 or larger)
• Ability to hear the library's security gate alarm, computer alerts, a normal speaking voice
