JOB TITLE:   

Library Assistant, Senior – Processing, Collections Management Unit, UW Libraries 

JOB PURPOSE:

Supervisor of Processing/Bindery/Receiving/Repair team. Process materials for the stacks. Perform the efficient and accurate check-in of print periodicals, serials, state documents, and newspapers. Create and maintain accurate records for all titles and formats using various systems and applications. Maintain Bindery account with the vendor. Retrieve, prepare, process, and ship materials for monthly bindery shipments. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise up to 4 part-time employees. Make recommendations in selection of part-time personnel. Train, supervise, evaluate, schedule, and revise the work of employees. Assign the workload and prioritize tasks to maintain a smooth workflow. Plan special projects. Make recommendations for salary and classification changes for part-time student employees. Approve timesheets to meet payroll deadlines.
  • Check in and label periodicals, serials, and newspapers. Create item records and update holdings records. Maintain renewal notifications and approve subscription invoices. Identify and resolve problems with materials by working with vendors. Work closely with supervisor to communicate changes using the appropriate forms. Perform recall, withdrawal, or transfer of items as needed. 
  • Process new materials for the stacks according to established procedures, including rare materials. Train part-time staff to perform processing tasks as needed.
  • Assess damaged books for treatment. Make decisions about repair, replacement, preservation or conservation of library materials following established procedures. Perform minor repairs including spine repairs, torn pages, page replacement, pambinding, and hinge repair.
  • Act as primary contact with commercial binder. Prepare, send, and receive materials for binding by a commercial binder. Determine monograph materials to be bound, including assessing damaged materials sent from Public Services department. Create and maintain monthly bindery shipment records. Update holdings records to accurately reflect changes. Approve invoices for payment. Coordinate with other library departments to include their materials in our pick-up and delivery schedule.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintain documentation for all assigned duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

Education:  Associate’s degree

Experience: 1-year work-related experience

Required licensure, certification, registration or other requirements:  None
