This is an hourly, at-will, non-benefited position working a varied schedule. Applicant must be available to work assigned shifts which include nights and weekends. The library’s hours are Monday and Tuesday, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

THE POSITION
Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of routine clerical duties within previously established guidelines, inputs information into the computer system, and assists patrons in the use of the library and in finding library materials. Helps maintain order and discipline in the library, answers telephone and in-person inquiries, explains policies and procedures, and resolves problems. Depending upon the division to which they are assigned, conducts story-time and other programs for children, charges/discharges and sensitizes/desensitizes materials,  registers patrons and issues library cards,  checks returned materials for damages, searches for library materials, prints and mails overdue notices, collects fines and fees, makes change and balances the cash register, maintains statistical records, types correspondence, searches, inputs information and performs copy cataloging on OCLC, processes interlibrary loan requests,  may assist Library Pages in sorting, arranging and shelving library materials, may supervise the training and work of special program workers or volunteers and in the basic repair of library materials; may suggest purchase of materials, and performs other related duties as assigned. This position requires shifts which include Fridays, Saturdays, and possibly some evenings.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  
A typical combination would be: graduation from high school or equivalent AND one year of experience in the clerical field, preferably in a library.   
 
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of clerical procedures and systems, word processing and automated library systems, practices and techniques used in library classification, interlibrary loan and reference source work, basic arithmetic and proper telephone etiquette.  
 
Ability to operate various office equipment including typewriters, computer keyboards, copiers, laminating machines; establish and maintain effective working relationships with patrons and other staff; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; type accurately, perform cashiering work with accuracy.
 
PHYSICAL EFFORT
This position are required to stoop, kneel, bend or reach over one's head to pick up or move objects; stand for extended periods of time, lifts, pushes and moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds with some assistance.
