General Statement

The Library Assistant, under general supervision, provides basic paraprofessional library services in an assigned service area of responsibility to support daily library operations. 

Seeking an enthusiastic and creative individual to work part-time in Main Library in Monroe or Edwards Memorial Library in Marshville. Part-time employees will be working approximately 20 hours per week and will include some mornings, evenings, and Saturday hours. To do this job, you must possess strong customer engagement skills, a great sense of teamwork, and a passion for serving patrons. Our ideal candidates have the ability to effectively navigate various types of hardware and software. Requires attention to detail, high energy, and excellent communication skills. Great technology skills are required.

Essential Functions

Meets the needs of each patron by promptly and efficiently using the library's resources.
 
Responds to the needs of coworkers in work unit.
 
Helps maintain the collection.
 
Answers telephone queries quickly and efficiently, referring callers to the appropriate library department.
 
Maintains knowledge of library policy and procedure.
 
Reports any unsafe or threatening condition to library security personnel, administration, or proper authorities.
 
Attends staff development programs.
 
Possesses basic knowledge of library's electronic and physical resources.
 
Helps advocate for the library and its services in both internal and external settings.
 
Accepts changes in hours or assigned tasks as needed to provide excellent public service; adheres to assigned schedule with regular and dependable attendance.

POSITION SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS
 
Circulation
Effectively and courteously assists patrons with basic to intermediate circulation transactions by using library resources and collections.  Possesses basic understanding of the library's automation software. Offers suggestions and advice to patrons concerning individual reading preferences, services, and programs.
 
Assist staff in promoting library programs and special events to patrons of all ages.
 
Assist patrons with using their devices to access our materials.
 
Assists all library selectors in the maintenance of collection by assessing the condition of library materials, helping restock displays, and encouraging the use and checkout of all library materials.
 
Possesses basic reader's advisory skills.
 
Ensures items are shelved daily and materials are kept in order and accessible to patrons and library staff. Additionally, shelves are read for accuracy of placement and kept neat and inviting.

Accurately records statistics.
 


Qualifications

Library Assistant ($16.48 - $24.72 Hourly):
Education and Experience:
Requires an Associate's Degree and one (1) year of experience of customer service; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Library Associate ($17.00 - $25.50 Hourly):
Education and Experience:
Requires a Bachelor's Degree and one (1) year of customer service experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Library Specialist ($20.80 - $31.20 Hourly):
Education and Experience:
Requires a Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of experience in customer service; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, printers, telephones, pagers, cash registers, book chargers, copiers, answering machines, fax machines, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.


Employees assigned to homebound must be physically able to drive a motor vehicle.
