Under general supervision, performs a variety of paraprofessional duties within the Circulation Services division of the library and performs related duties as required.
Assists with Circulation Services, welcoming the public and providing consistent excellent customer service. Performs check-in, checkout, and renewal of materials, placing and processing holds, issuing library cards, and collecting fees. Shelves materials and maintains shelf order. Assists with interlibrary loans. Assists with integrated library system (ILS) operations, maintaining patron records, generating patron notifications, compiling statistics and preparing reports. Assures confidentiality of patron records. Assists with delivery of regular and interoffice mail.
Duties may include assisting with Technical Services, performing cataloging and/or and materials processing by barcoding, labeling, covering and packaging new acquisitions, making them shelf-ready and available for use by the public. Monitors holds requests and expedites processing of in-demand items. Assists with integrated library system (ILS) operations, maintaining bibliographic records and collection inventories, compiling statistics and preparing reports. Processes materials withdrawn from the collection. Receives shipments and checks against packing slips, reporting and reconciling shipments damaged or sent in error. Performs repairs, cleans media and maintains the quality and appearance of library materials.
Assists patrons in locating library materials and assists in answering information inquiries. Assists in the use of public photocopiers, computers and printing equipment. Maintains displays and assists in collection marketing and promotional efforts. Assists in the orientation and training of library volunteers. Monitors supply levels and requests additional stock as needed. Provides input in the selection of new materials and provides feedback toward policy and procedural improvements.
High school diploma or GED required. College coursework and/or previous library work experience preferred.
Proficiency in using computer workstations, keyboard, printers, scanners and ancillary equipment. Ability to type and perform data entry. Competency in the use and care of specialized library, office and building equipment. Basic Internet skills required.
Communication and interpersonal skills necessary to establish effective working relationships with library patrons and co-workers. Ability to manage multiple tasks and contribute in a cooperative team environment.
Valid driver's license required. Must have and maintain a good driving record in accordance with the driving standards as established by the City of Rowlett. Must report all traffic citations to his/her departmental Director or his/her designee within two working days of receipt.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. Responsible for regular attendance and reporting to work on time.
Works primarily in a climate-controlled office environment. May need to push carts, lift boxes or move pieces of equipment weighing up to 30 pounds. Work performed may require standing, stooping, bending and reaching. Work performed may occasionally cause fatigue of eyes and fingers. May require sitting for periods of time, manual dexterity and visual acuity in the use of computers.
