The City of Pasadena is currently seeking a creative, enthusiastic, and team-orientated Part-Time Library Assistant (20 hrs/week) who will provide excellent customer service and promote a positive library experience to all users and visitors in our City's libraries.    

The Library Assistant is a first point of contact for the public and represents the Department and City by providing first-class customer service to Library patrons, assisting with technology, library programs, outreach and more. 


IDEAL CANDIDATE 
The ideal candidate will have a strong customer service background with experience working in libraries, preferably in a public library setting. This person will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong problem-solving skills, be flexible and positive, as well as have a strong work ethic.  

Essential Functions

  • Employing active listening and excellent customer service in every interaction, answers directional and basic reference questions; determines patron needs and assists patrons in locating books, periodicals and other print and non-print materials; instructs patrons on use of print, online and other library resources; searches for reserve requests, places materials on hold and prepares materials for transit; rotates periodicals as needed; accepts donated materials and prepares receipts; processes library materials.
  • Performing a variety of routine and complex circulation duties, issues new or replacement cards for patrons; checks in/out library materials; retrieves materials placed on hold and pulls expired/lapsed holds; collects payments for services or fees and resolves basic patron account issues.
  • Assists with library programs including book discussion groups, story hours, class visits and book talks; prepares displays and bulletin boards; sets up audio/video equipment and craft supplies; may conduct teen or child programs following established procedures.
  • Collects data and information for library activity reports and statistics regarding circulation and reference services.
  • Assists patrons with internet use, explains internet policy and troubleshoots basic internet and printer problems; assists patrons with e-book devices.
  • Provides basic technical support to patrons in the uses and operations of library equipment including, but not limited to, computers, printers, scanners, copiers and microfilm.
  • Submits inter-library loan requests; retrieves and sends books to other libraries or places on hold shelf; monitors and follows up on overdue materials.
  • Assists with facility maintenance functions including turning on/off lights and computers, unlocking or locking doors and gates, reporting facility or security issues promptly and keeping library facility clean.
  • May be responsible for ordering library supplies.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Graduation from an accredited two-year college with an Associate of Arts degree
  • one year experience performing duties in a library; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
SELECTION PROCESS

There are currently two part-time vacancies in the Public Services Division of the Libraries and Information Services Department. The resulting eligibility may be used to fill this vacancy and similar vacancies in the future.

Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and comply with the City's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy during the course of employment.
