Job Description

Provides clerical and administrative support to Librarian in assigned Library division; assists with planning and conducting Library programs. Uses automated circulation system to check Library materials in/out in accordance with established Library policies and procedures.
Shelves and maintains library materials, cataloging and mending as needed.  Greets and assists Library patrons, collects and records fines and fees, and registers patrons and updates patron records.  Orients, trains, and guides less experienced employees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists with various library duties including overseeing assigned projects, performing circulation duties, and providing customer service to patrons; creates and implements educational, literary, and recreational programs for the community.
  • Performs collection development and maintenance; shelves materials according to standard processes, and may mend, reclassify, or remove materials when necessary.
  • Executes cashier duties for various transactions and funds such as collecting fines and clearing accounts. 
  • Performs clerical work related to processing book transactions, checking in/out, weeding, and renewals; tracks and monitors inventory and budget; gathers data and prepares reports. 
  • Assists with basic cleaning of assigned area within the library.
  • Performs related work as required.

  • Knowledge of current trends.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and policies.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical Effort Requirements Position will have the following exposures
  • Office or similar indoor environment, relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards.
  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency
  • At least 3 years' experience in library circulation, library information systems, and customer service. 

Valid Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment. 

As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.

Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.

Effective January 7, 2008, all persons in safety-sensitive functions/positions, as per City of Laredo Drug and Alcohol Policy definition, shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
