The Fort Dodge Public Library is seeking a friendly, organized, and customer-focused individual to join our team as a Library Assistant II (Part-Time). As a Library Assistant II, you will serve as one of the library’s primary points of contact with the public, offering support and assistance to patrons of all ages and backgrounds. You will be responsible for a variety of important tasks that contribute to the smooth daily operations of the library, including circulation, customer service, technical services, and program support. Whether you’re helping a child find their next favorite book, guiding an adult through online resources, assisting with technology, or processing new materials, your work will directly support our mission to connect people with information, ideas, and opportunities for lifelong learning.
You will also have the opportunity to be cross-trained in multiple departments, gaining valuable experience across adult, teen, and children’s services. This position requires a strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to provide inclusive, respectful service to a diverse community. Perform circulation duties: checking materials in/out, issuing cards, processing holds, and managing overdue/lost items.
Assist patrons with library equipment, computers, the catalog, and basic technology troubleshooting.
Staff the Adult or Children's Services desks, providing basic reference, reader's advisory, and interlibrary loan support.
Receive, catalog, and process new materials.
Create promotional displays, flyers, and handouts.
Support library programs and special projects.
Maintain confidentiality and enforce library policies professionally.
Minimum:
High school diploma or GED.
At least two (2) years of customer service experience.
Ability to pass a background check, physical exam, and drug screen.
Availability to work evenings and weekends as scheduled.
Preferred:
Associate’s degree or some college coursework.
Previous library or public sector experience.
Familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System or library classification systems.
Fluency in a language other than English is a plus.
