The Library Assistant II position is an important part of the Juneau Public Libraries. This person can expect to work with the public and library staff both in the library facilities and within the Juneau community.
WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
The Juneau Public Libraries have three branches: the Downtown Library (located atop the Marine Parking Garage on the waterfront), the Mendenhall Valley Library (located in Dimond Park), and the Douglas Library (located in the Douglas Community Building, a shared facility with the Fire Department). Library staff offices are located at the downtown branch. The libraries are open 7 days a week.
This position works Monday-Friday with weekly evening and occasional weekend shifts.
The Library Assistant II position is responsible for providing high quality grant related programming to children, families, and adults and coordinating event promotion with library staff. This position works both independently and as part of a collaborative team in the planning and implementation of work. This position spends approximately one third of their time working regular and relief shifts, providing specialized technical library support and covering both circulation and reference responsibilities on the Library’s public service desks. This position frequently uses library databases and electronic catalog, and assists patrons in the use of library services, materials, and facilities. The incumbent of this position takes a lead role in handling difficult patron behavior and resolving challenging situations that involve complaints or inappropriate patron conduct according to library policy.
Additionally this position is responsible for grants work including working with partner agencies and writing grant applications and reports, negotiating honoraria and travel arrangements for program speakers, independently and collaboratively planning and conducting library programs, and marketing library services and events.
This position develops, produces, and distributes publicity materials for library priorities such as programs and electronic databases. This position is responsible for maintaining and utilizing local and social media and the library website for public notification of programs and events as well as conducting short-term promotional campaigns to the general public and targeted interest groups.
Education:
Graduation from high school or the equivalent
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience in a library or bookstore or related experience requiring technical skills in the use of library materials.
SUBSTITUTION: College study may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of 2.67 semester (4 quarter hours) for one month of experience up to a maximum of twenty-four months.
Other:
Employee must have access to reliable transportation to transport self to Library branches.
Valid Alaska Driver’s License at time of appointment and for continued employment.
