This Position is ONLY Open to Montgomery County Government Employees:

  1. Current Montgomery County Government employees;
  2. Montgomery County employees who were affected by reduction-in-force and currently have RIF priority rights;
  3. Active Montgomery County local fire and rescue department volunteers with at least 50 points under the length of service award program (LOSAP); or
  4. Active Project SEARCH Interns or former Montgomery County Government Customized Employment Public Interns, or Project SEARCH Interns within 24 months of completion of internship.

Please note: The salary range above represents this position’s earning potential. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $57,596 to $85,071 based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate for this Library Assistant II position will be passionate about providing courteous customer service at the circulation desk and throughout the library, be highly enthusiastic about leading a team and assisting customers with circulation processes, and processing of library materials. The candidate will be comfortable with technology and provide computer assistance and troubleshooting to customers and staff.


THIS RECRUITMENT WILL GENERATE A 6-MONTH ELIGIBLE LIST TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANCIES FOR THE FULL-TIME LIBRARY ASSISTANT II AT ALL LOCATIONS WITHIN MCPL.

What You'll Be Doing

Essential Duties/Major Responsibilities:


  • Promotes and supports MCPL’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion values with staff and customers. Centers the experiences of people and communities who are most affected by structural inequities when engaging in programming, partnerships, and information services work. 
  • Provide frontline customer service and assistance on a recurring basis and respond to various inquiries and requests regarding circulation and other library services.
  • Checkout and return library materials, customer library card registrations, and account resolutions using the Integrated Library Software (ILS).
  • Provide supervision over the work of Library Pages and volunteers.
  • Conducts Library Page Selection interviews. Trains, monitors, and ensures that Library Page work is completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Complete Library Pages’ timecards on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Establish and maintain effective teamwork with co-workers and subordinates


Hours for this position:

  • Library hours of operation are 7 days a week including evenings, days, and weekends. Employees are expected to be available for work during these times. Individual schedules, including evenings and weekends, will vary based on branch operational needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduation from high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland


ExperienceTwo (2) years of library assistance work, including one (1) year comparable to that of Library Assistant I.

Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.


Physical Ability: Ability to perform light physical effort, such as keyboarding, standing or staying in place for long periods of time and lifting and/or moving book tubs, carts and library materials weighing 20 pounds, regularly, and up to 50 pounds, as required.


Medical exam protocol: This position requires completion of a pre-employment medical history form to assess your ability to safely perform the essential duties of the role.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

All Applicants will be reviewed by the Office of Human Resources (OHR) for minimum qualifications. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be rated “Qualified,” placed on the Referred List, and may be considered for an interview.  Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:


  1. Experience with an Intergraded Library System (ILS) through working in a public library setting.
  2. Experience using technology, office equipment, mobile apps, office software and troubleshooting computer-based hardware.
  3. Experience creating an inspiring team lead environment with an open communication culture, delegating tasks, and motivating individuals. 
  4. Experience adapting to changes and completing formal and informal training necessary to support change.
  5. Experience prioritizing work and time management skills.
  6. Providing direct service to customers.
