The Central Library offers a chance to experience the exciting pace of a large urban library with many opportunities to explore and grow.

About Our Position

Become a Library Assistant II with Central Circulating Services at Denver Public Library’s Central Library! As part of the Circulating Services team, you will serve in a dynamic location both on the front lines as the face of library circulation as well as behind the scenes as the hub for materials processing for the entire library system.

You’ll be spending most of your time at customer-facing service points, interacting with a diverse population while using a trauma-informed lens and creating a welcoming library space where all are free to explore and connect. You’ll create positive experiences for library customers by checking out and returning materials, registering customers for library cards, placing requests for DPL items as well as materials from other agencies and responding to customer questions about using library resources and locating library materials.

You’ll use library technology and other mechanical tools to efficiently process and route library materials with accuracy and attention to detail, while staying current on library trends, policy and procedures, especially those relating to circulation. You may assist with shelving, collection maintenance, and outreach projects as requested.

You’ll grow as you support the library's goal of being a learning organization by participating in approved learning opportunities and projects that support the Library's mission, vision and values and goals. By communicating effectively about issues and initiatives with customers, staff and administration, you’ll help recognize your colleague’s strengths and contributions and foster relationships with colleagues throughout DPL.

What You Would Bring

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, physically active work environment with constant public contact.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, positive attitude, cultural sensitivity, compassion and a sense of humor when working with customers and colleagues of all ages and backgrounds.

  • Ability to interpret, communicate and present information to a diverse audience with experience explaining services to customers of varying ages and education levels.

  • Ability to use workplace technology effectively including email, calendar, internet, databases, video conferencing, and other software.

  • Ability to use workplace technology effectively including email, calendar, internet, databases, video conferencing, and other software, plus a willingness to learn new technology as needed.

  • An equity-driven approach to team dynamics with the ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate, and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.

  • Ability to adapt to the ebb and flow of materials intake and stay focused on repetitive tasks in a busy and physically-demanding environment.

  • A demonstrated commitment to developing and maintaining a welcoming environment for a diverse customer base.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize.

  • Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.

  • One (1) year of clerical experience.

Substitutions:

  • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of customer service experience that included working on a computer.

  • A second language fluency is a definite plus

Don't let a "checklist" hold you back! Research shows that women and other underrepresented and historically marginalized groups often self-select out if they don't meet every qualification. If you're reading this and feel a true passion for making an impact, we wholeheartedly encourage you to apply, as an equal combination of education and experience will be considered for all applicants. Your excitement for this work matters just as much as your resume.
