The Position
The current vacancy is at the Fort Bragg Branch and is part-time at 40 hours bi-weekly.
The list developed from this recruitment will be used for a limited period to fill open and promotional, regular full-time, and part-time positions throughout the County, should they occur.
Pursuant to current bargaining unit agreements, employees regularly assigned to the coastal region or in Covelo are eligible to receive a 5% assignment premium.
Under general supervision, performs routine work supporting library operations and patron services. Duties include providing customer service and basic technology assistance to patrons; managing circulation materials; shelving books and maintaining library materials; and performing basic clerical duties.

Job Requirements and Minimum Qualifications
Duties may include but are not limited to the following.
- Perform opening and closing procedures for the library.
- Greet visitors and provide information on library services and functions.
- Registers new patrons and issues new library cards; Check library materials in and out, ensuring that all materials are complete and in good condition.
- Process payments for late, lost, or damaged materials.
- Provide basic instruction on using the library catalog and electronic resources; May answer routine reference questions, referring non-routine reference questions to Librarian.
- Assist patrons with basic technological support for computers, printers, copiers, and scanners, as well as library applications and digital resources, referring more complex technical issues to higher-level staff for resolution.
- Check shelves for missing materials and maintain accurate records; Shelve and maintain proper organization of library materials, including routing returned items to their designated locations.
- Clean and repair discs using specialized equipment.
- Prepare basic reports as requested.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED; and, one year of experience performing general office duties that included public contact;
OR
Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Driver's License is preferred but not required. Some positions in this classification may require possession of a valid California driver’s license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of customer service, with ability to effectively communicate with diverse populations.
- Basic library methods and practices, including some knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System..
- Understanding of electronically based information systems related to library operations and services.
- Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.
- Record keeping, filing methods and records management techniques.
- General office procedures, policies and practices, and basic computer and other general office equipment.
Skill in:
- Customer Service and communication skills, enabling effective and courteous interaction with diverse populations, including internal staff, patrons, and other departmental staff.
- Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
- Using a computer to accurately and rapidly enter and retrieve data and information.
- Skilled in typing correspondence and documents from rough draft or printed text.
- Operating and routine maintenance of general office machines, including specialized library equipment such as 3D printers and disc cleaning machines.
Mental and Physical Abilities:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and community members.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
- Ability to organize items in correct order according to call number letters and fractions digit by digit.
- While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; lift and/or move up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 45 pounds occasionally; and speak and hear.

Qualifications Appraisal Panel Exam for qualified Library Assistant I applicants will be held November 17-19, 2025.
