The Library Assistant I conducts the day-to-day business of the Kimberly Public Library. Primarily, it is the responsibility of the Library Assistant I to provide friendly and helpful service to library patrons through personable interaction and efficient application of circulation processes. The Library Assistant I is supervised by the Library Director. The available Library Assistant I position is a permanent part-time closing shift position that works about 15 hours per week. The ideal applicant will be able to work Monday through Friday from 3-6pm daily and a rotation of Saturdays from 9am-1pm once each month.
Specific Duties
A. Uses Innovative Interfaces CARL Integrated Library System (ILS) to conduct library business.
1. Checks materials in and out.
2. Registers new library patrons and maintains the patron database.
3. Administers charges and payments on patron accounts.
4. Places holds for materials on behalf of patrons; contacts patrons when requested materials arrive.
5. Prepares materials for delivery to other libraries and processes materials received from other libraries for local patrons.
6. Responds to daily and monthly ILS reports as assigned by the Library Director.
B. Assists with the maintenance and development of library collections.
1. Processes new library materials of all formats and maintains database of collections.
2. Shelves library materials and helps to maintain order of the collections.
3. Recommends materials for purchase.
4. Assists with the maintenance of items in the collection via regular examination, weeding, cleaning, and mending of damaged materials.
5. Evaluates donated materials for inclusion in the library collections or for addition to the ongoing book sale.
6. Inventories collections and maintains orderly stacks through cleaning and shelf-reading as time allows.
C. Provides assistance in the use of the library and its resources by the public.
1. Answers reference questions, assists patrons with finding desired materials, provides readers’ advisory assistance, as needed.
2. Requests materials via interlibrary loan for items not found in InfoSoup; responds to requests for our materials from libraries outside of InfoSoup.
3. Assists patrons with basic use of InfoSoup, public Internet computers, and SAM sign-up computers.
4. Maintains lists of best sellers; prepares bibliographies and lists of materials, and recommends reading selections as needed.
5. Actively contributes to the creation of positive relationships with the public, advocates library services and programs, and interacts with colleagues and the community to endorse good public relations that affirm the library’s image as a valuable and meaningful cornerstone of the community.
D. Other duties as assigned or required, including, but not limited to, the following:
1. Assists with youth services programs and summer reading programs. The seasonal position focuses on providing support for the library’s summer reading program as directed by the children’s librarian.
2. Assists with the collection of library use and programming statistics.
3. Coordinates library displays of materials and community collections.
4. Participates in the creation of virtual programs and services and the use of a variety of virtual tools for the purpose of promoting library services, programs, and collections.
5. Assists with special projects as assigned by the Library Director.
6. Participates in regular staff meetings and other training opportunities as assigned by the Library Director.
