Library Assistant

 

Description:

 

A library assistant performs clerical and other library duties as required. As a paraprofessional, the assistant helps to circulate materials, check and sort mail, account for and display periodicals, laminate materials for staff, shelf books and materials, and assists patrons. Works to fulfill the vision and goal of the library media center program.

     

Reports to:  Principal

 

Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate with students, faculty, and co-workers.
  • Ability to follow library policies and procedures, especially as they relate to the use of student IDs, checking out and in items, collecting fines, and student passes.
  • Ability to work with computer applications, particularly the use of the online library catalog and management system (Destiny) and use of email, keyboarding.
  • Ability to troubleshoot printers.
  • Ability to shelf materials and read shelves for accuracy.
  • Ability to assist patrons with questions and reader advisory.
  • Working knowledge of English grammar and spelling.
  • Ability to open, sort, and route incoming materials (periodicals) and general mail.
  • Ability to use a copying machine, laminator, and poster printer.
  • Ability to set priorities to meet assignment deadlines.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist students and staff in locating and using materials in the library media center by answering questions, gathering materials, and demonstrating the use of equipment and software.
  • Perform general secretarial responsibilities including typing, filing, compiling statistics, and using computers available in the library media center to accomplish many of these tasks.
  • Circulates library materials; includes checking materials in and out and sending overdue notices to students.
  • Maintains the library collection; includes shelving books, reading shelves, mending and repairing items, and assisting with inventory.
  • Maintains supply inventory and assists in the preparation of supply orders.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, and attractive environment; assists in the preparation of displays.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands of Position:

  • Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping.
  • Standing on a ladder or stool.
  • Bending/twisting and reaching.
  • Talking and listening.
  • Lifting and carrying.
  • Handling the shelving of books.
  • Pushing and pulling (library carts on wheels).

Terms of Employment:

 

182 days per school year; Salary based on District Scale for Teacher Assistants.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
