The primary responsibility of a full-time Library Assistant in the Access Services Department at the Central Library is to work the front circulation desk, which includes checking materials in and out, registering borrowers, and processing holds. They will work the tech desk and assist patrons with the public access computers. They will assist with collection maintenance, creating book displays, shelving, straightening, replacing labels, and assisting librarians in the shifting or rearranging of collections. They will also be responsible for managing select hours in the Makerspace at the Central Library location. Duties will include serving as a monitor during scheduled times, troubleshooting varied technologies, providing demonstrations, and offering technical expertise for both hardware and software.
The Library Assistant position assists with reader's advisory, general reference and public service desk duties in person, online and by telephone with a goal of responsive, excellent customer service. Materials processing, collection maintenance, money counting and basic office tasks are all typical for this position. Library Assistants will demonstrate current computer competencies including Microsoft Office, the NC Cardinal/Evergreen ILS system, electronic devices used to download library media, and basic office equipment. Independent judgement must be used within the framework of departmental policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned by the Library Branch Manager.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes nights and weekends. Forsyth County Public Library has a flexible hiring clause with the placement of candidates throughout the ten-location system.
Thorough knowledge of the book collection, reference books and other materials in the library.
Working knowledge of the policies and procedures of the library system.
Ability to relate to a wide range of children and older adults.
Ability to promote interest in library services.
Ability to communicate with others tactfully and courteously.
High school graduation or GED and two years of relevant experience which includes at least one year of library experience. A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.
