This classification is the primary position for library work. The position requires excellent customer service skills in serving the public and organizational skills to maintain the library’s collection. This classification is responsible for materials movement, library circulation, and materials processing. In addition to those areas, this classification may provide basic reference services, conduct public programs, and act as the person-in-charge at a branch location other than Tillamook Main.

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience

  • One (1) year of clerical and customer service experience in any setting which gives exposure to office procedures, machines, and methods.   

Certifications or Licenses

  • At the time of appointment, must possess a valid Oregon driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Other Qualifications

  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal history background investigation.    

Essential Duties

Duties assigned to this classification include, but are not limited to, the following examples.

  • The Library Assistant carries out a full range of recurring activities involved in circulating, maintaining, and locating items in the library collection.
  • Shelving and Materials Processing:
    • Maintain the library’s collection: Sort, shelve, and organize library materials including books, periodicals, CDs, DVDs, and equipment by call number or according to internal library protocol.   
    • Assist in the weeding and collection maintenance work as directed by librarians or managers. 
    • Maintain public displays of books or other materials. This includes community information display areas.
    • Fill and transport crates of library materials. 
    • Process additions to the collection: Cover, stamp, and apply labeling.  Input location codes and item records into catalog system.  
    • Identify periodicals that have not been received and prepare and submit claims to the publisher. 
    • Assist the technical services specialist with processing, preparing, lending, and receiving Interlibrary Loan materials. 
    • Pull up daily list of requests from other libraries in the Chinook Library Network. 
    • Pull items and send to the requesting library. 
    • Process items returned from Chinook Library Network.  
    • Provide basic mending of damaged library materials.
  • Customer Service – Library Accounts, Ready Reference, and Programs:
    • Responsible for customer service with materials circulation and patron account management.  This includes checking materials in and out, creating library accounts and issuing library cards, updating patron account information, placing and distributing library materials held for patrons. 
    • Resolve patron problems by researching disputed late fees, charges for lost or damaged materials, or errors in registration. 
    • Prepare paper and virtual brochures, flyers, bookmarks, handouts, posters for distribution to patrons. 
    • May provide customer service at outreach destinations and cover shifts at other library locations.
    • May engage in basic reference services for patrons including finding library materials based on patron requests, looking up basic information such as location directions, government and non-profit information and services, whereas detailed searches are performed by higher classifications. 
    • Help patrons use computers, printers, fax machines, and other library equipment. 
    • May reserve study rooms and other library spaces.
    • Develop and host library programs for the public.
  • Courier / Outreach Delivery: 
    • May drive the library van to each branch library in the county as well as other consortium locations, to deliver requested library materials to the appropriate library/branches. 
    • May provide outreach customer service and deliver library materials to patrons that cannot access the library on their own.


Performs additional duties as assigned.

Supervision is not a function assigned to this role.

Works under close supervision, performing routine tasks independently based on past experience. Deviations from established practices are referred to the supervisor for guidance.
