Definition

Under general supervision, performs a variety of clerical duties in support of library operations; performs related duties as required.

Representative Duties

  1. Provides assistance to patrons at the circulation desk; processes book and library card requests; changes and collects fines. May assist in book processing. 
  2. Provides general and detailed information to the public on library services and resources; assists patrons in researching and locating materials. i
  3. Shelves books; reads shelves; conducts systematic search to locate misplaced materials.
  4. Uses library software applications; maintains records and prepares routine reports; may be assigned primary responsibility for special library projects. 
  5. May be asked to lead other staff members, interns or volunteers in the completion of special assignments.
  6. Operates a variety of office equipment, such as cash register, copy machine, and computers.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

One year of clerical experience including customer services or any combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities.

Knowledge of:
Basic library procedures; English usage including correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling; public contact techniques; office methods and procedures; Dewey decimal system.

Ability to:
Alphabetize and numerically sort materials; maintain records and files; type at rate sufficient to perform the assigned duties; establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, co-workers,  and the general public; provide excellent customer service; tabulate and compile statistics; communicate both verbally or in writing; perform mathematical calculations.

Special Requirements:
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California Driver’s License may be required. 

Selection: Screening will consist of a competitive assessment of relevant education, training and work experience to be followed by an interview before an Oral Board to determine the most qualified candidates. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview, and the decision of the screening committee is final. Applicants will receive electronic notification regarding results for all phases of the recruitment up to the establishment of the eligibility list, if applicable. Candidates will be notified of the date and time of scheduled interviews and/or tests. The City of Porterville reserves the right to alter the testing process at any time, without notice, as needed.
