The College of the Desert, Desert Community College District enrolls approximately 15,000 students each academic year with steady enrollment growth each year. BASIC FUNCTION

Strive towards student success through supporting the College of the Desert’s Librarian services. The Reference Librarian will enable student success in a team-based environment by providing outreach, instruction and in-depth reference assistance.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Example of Duties:
  • Demonstrated competence in current research and information gathering systems and methods.
  • Knowledge of computerized information database systems.
  • Work closely with other librarians in the design and delivery of instruction programming.
  • Deliver library instruction and other library services for new students.
  • Assess the impact of information literacy instruction on student learning outcomes, retention and graduation.
  • Share in the responsibility for in-person and online reference services to students and faculty.
  • Work as a library liaison on the main campus, as well as branch campuses.
  • Library instruction schedule may include evenings and weekends, as well as visits to other sites.
  • Other professional responsibilities as a faculty member of the college, such as committee work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • i. Attend and participate in department/center meetings when assigned by the District or shared governance 
  • j. Participate in the process of shared governance by contributing to the academic community through committee work on the department division, college and/or district level, or participate in other significant non-classroom college, district, or community activities 
  • k. Consult with Supervisor on personnel needs; assist with position announcements, recruitment, and screening/interviewing committees 
  • l.  Participate in mentoring of new faculty as assigned 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s in library science, library and information science, OR the equivalent
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certification, training, or experience in Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) and Open Educational Resource (OER) librarianship.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS

Employment Status:
College of the Desert Adjunct Association (CODAA) Bargaining Unit
Salary Placement is according to the CODAA Collective Bargaining Agreement. For information on salary placement, please see the Collective Bargaining Agreement and Salary Schedule.


Part-time faculty assignments are filled on an as needed basis utilizing this open and ongoing applicant pool. The number of available openings will vary from semester to semester. Candidates selected for the pool will be contacted by the division should a vacancy arise.

Working Conditions:
Library environment. Constant interruptions. Assignments may be at the Palm Desert Campus or one of our sites in Indio, Mecca/Thermal, Desert Hot Springs, or Palm Springs. May require some evening and weekend responsibility.

A California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) retiree may not accept employment until after the first 180 days of retirement. Anyone retired from CalPERS accepting permanent employment with the DCCD will be required to reinstate as an active CalPERS member. Please contact CalPERS for additional information regarding your retirement status.

Any active vested member of California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS), who accepts employment with the DCCD to perform service that requires membership in CalPERS, is eligible to elect to continue retirement system coverage under CalSTRS
