The International School of San Francisco is a PK-12 independent school in San Francisco.  Founded in 1962, the school is a multicultural, multilingual educational institution with over 1,100 students across an urban campus in the heart of the city.

Position Overview

The International School of San Francisco is seeking a dynamic and collaborative librarian to join our community. This position allows for a myriad of opportunities both personal and professional. 

Reporting to the Assistant Head of School for Teaching and Learning, the librarian will collaborate with faculty, section teams, and leadership to foster deep intellectual engagement and joyful discovery, empowering students in Grade 3 to 8 to access, evaluate, and employ information in multiple languages. The librarian will play an integral part in creating our vibrant, multicultural, international learning community and fulfilling our mission of developing critical thinkers. Under the librarian’s guidance, the library will be an intellectual hub for students and faculty, providing windows and mirrors through the curation of a rich array of resources from a wide range of voices. This learning environment will support the development of the skill of perspective-taking and foster dialogue and discourse in keeping with our values of respect, integrity, inclusion, collaboration, and curiosity.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate in the articulation of developmentally-appropriate learning outcomes for effectively gathering, evaluating, and using information from a range of media and in the implementation of programs and pedagogy to foster those outcomes
• Support classroom teachers  in the service of curricular and programmatic goals
• Model and foster the highest standards of ethical and responsible use of information and media of all kinds
• Develop a critical approach to information by providing a wide diversity of resources, methods, and tools and by instructing students in the evaluation of materials, both in stand-alone ways and in collaboration with classroom teachers
• Promote student autonomy, initiative and teamwork
• Contribute to the students’ cultural, social and citizenship education by implementing activities and organizing events that promote identity development, community engagement, and an interest in reading as a way to connect with the world
• Leverage an expertise in age-appropriate literature and an active feedback loop from students to maintain an engaging collection that stimulates student interest in a wide variety of subject areas and encourages the use of library materials
• Ensure that the library is a safe space that promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, supports  a sense of belonging in all members of the community, and upholds our school values
• Recognizing the role of parents and caregivers in the development of critical thinking and the use of information, collaborate with classroom teachers and leadership to support family engagement and education 
• Maintain and enhance the collection to ensure a wide diversity of resources and tools for student and adult patrons
• Actively maintain our connections with other libraries, schools, cultural associations and other establishments, to provide access to a wide range of resources
• Stay up to date on developments in library practices and resources; incorporate approaches to continually improve the learning environment
• Create a warm, welcoming and inspiring environment
• Other duties as assigned, including acting as a Middle School advisor

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a school library, preferably in a multilingual and/or international environment
• CAPES  de Documentation ou Master of Library Science (MLS), teaching experience and/or knowledge of childhood development 
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including listening and communication skills 

• Adaptability, creativity, and the ability to collaborate as well as work independently
• Skill with detailed, precise tasks as well as an aptitude for thinking at a broader level
• Knowledge of and genuine passion for literature and the written word in all its forms, with an ability to share these with the school community

• Comfort with speaking and reading in French a plus

Salary Range for this position is $63,850 - $108,420 based on experience and qualifications

Must be eligible to work in the US.
