Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves as Director of the Health Sciences Library at the John A. Burns School of Medicine.
- Develop, with key stakeholder input, and lead implementation of a strategic vision for health science library services that are aligned with the JABSOM mission, evolving needs and challenges of medical and health sciences education, research, patient care, and accreditation requirements for the medical school (Liaison Committee on Medical Education), residency and fellowship programs (Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education), Speech-Language Pathology Program (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Council on Academic Accreditation).
- Serves as Chief Collection Development Officer for the Library. Works closely with the Librarians at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Library and the Medical Libraries Consortium of Hawaii to manage resources, cost, and accessibility of resources for all library constituencies.
- In alignment with JABSOM, UHM, and UH efforts, explore the integration of cutting-edge technologies to enhance library services, ensuring that libraries remain at the forefront of technological advancements in the field.
- Foster collaborative relationships with team members and learners to enhance the impact of library services on education and research.
- Collaborate with academic departments to support faculty utilizing library resources for teaching, research, and scholarship (including AI-driven library resources).
- Manages all faculty and staff of the library.
- Serves as a member of the UH Library Council, which provides leadership for the library system.
- Represents the Health Sciences Library in communities and with various constituencies.
- Oversees and manages the Library budget, ensuring efficient resource allocation to meet the needs of health professions and health sciences programs.
- Partners with JABSOM efforts to improve medical and health literacy among team members, learners, and healthcare professionals.
- Other scholarly and administrative duties as assigned.
Librarian IV Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) or equivalent education from an accredited college or university.
- A second Master’s degree in a specialized subject area.
- Seven years of appropriate experience or four years in the rank of Librarian III.
- Ability to create, implement, and manage the strategic vision and goals of a library.
- Ability to manage library resources (e.g. staffing and budget).
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with and among staff, faculty, administrators, students, community agencies and the public.
- Experience with licensing electronic resources for libraries.
- Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
Librarian V Minimum Qualifications
In addition to the MQs for Librarian IV:
- Twelve years of appropriate experience or four years in the rank of Librarian IV.
- Achieved an acknowledged reputation for excellence among professional colleagues outside the immediate University community.
- Ability to create, implement, and manage a library's strategic vision and goals.
- Ability to manage library resources (e.g., staffing and budget).
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with and among staff, faculty, administrators, students, community agencies, and the public.
Desirable Qualifications
- Proven track record of providing strategic vision, goals, leadership and management of an academic health sciences library and/or academic library.
- Leadership experience in a health sciences and/or academic library.
- Experience in health sciences collection development, especially with regard to electronic resources in the context of an academic university library setting.
- Experience in providing reference and information services and instruction in the use of library services and resources in a health sciences and/or academic library.
- Experience with grants application process and implementation.
- Experience in evaluating and using library management systems (i.e., Alma), databases, and other information products and services.
- Demonstrated provision of culturally- or literacy-relevant library instruction and/or service to underserved populations.
- Knowledge of University of Hawai`i procurement policies and procedures.
- Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) Membership.
