Description

The City of Seminole is seeking qualified candidates for the Librarian II position in the Youth Services section of the Seminole Community Library. This is an advanced professional Librarian position. This position is responsible for providing reference and reader advisory services to patrons. This position will also serve as an in-charge staff member in the absence of Supervisory staff. 

Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Serving patrons at the Youth Services information desk.
  • Developing and providing a variety of programs for children, teens, and families.
  • Serving as staff liaison to the Library Teen Board
  • Assisting in collection development of materials for children, teens, families, parents, and teachers.
  • Overseeing the maintenance for the Young Adult collections, including selection, weeding, shifting, etc.
  • Serving on the Seminole Community Library's Social Media Committee, and overseeing the Youth Services postings on social media.

Advanced professional Library position.  Work is performed under the general supervision of a Librarian III or the Library Director, as assigned.  Work is performed within the established Departmental and City policies, procedures, and guidelines but with wide latitude in the use of independent judgment and decision making.   During occasions of local emergencies, this position shall be required to perform emergency tasks which may result in extended work hours as well as extended periods of time away from family members.

Examples of Duties

•    Uses print and digital resources to answer questions in person or by phone, email or online.  Instructs patrons in using the library catalog, online databases, and other information sources.  Assists patrons in locating library materials by escorting them to appropriate areas of the collection or by determining the probable location of the items requested.
•    Processes inter-Library loan requests, incoming and outgoing; retrieves books and other items as necessary.
•    Performs collection development and management functions by reading journals, reviewing magazines, and publishers catalogs, and other reference materials; evaluates books and other information sources for purchase, and provides ordering information to the section supervisor or designee.  Periodically evaluates Library collection in area(s) of responsibility for timeliness, breadth, depth, physical condition, frequency of use, and public demand.  
•    Occasionally, in the absence of Library Supervisory staff, may be designated as “person in charge.”
•    Keeps abreast of current trends and materials by attending conferences, workshops, special interest group meetings, and professional development opportunities appropriate to position.  
•    Initiates contact with other librarians and professionals and maintains professional network contacts to assure the best of service for patrons.
•    Provides easy accessibility to reference section materials; tabulates, classifies, arranges and organizes all reference materials, creates specialized bibliographies and easy reference tips; orders brochures, signs and other user aids, on an as needed basis.
•    Strives to maximize effective communications between assigned personnel, other employees within the Library, volunteers and patrons of the Library.
•    Performs original cataloging of all library material formats using the Aleph automation system.  This includes, but is not limited to, creating full MARC records, creating holdings and item records, and reviewing bibliographic records for accuracy.
•    Performs copy cataloging of all library material formats using the Aleph automation system.  This includes, but is not limited to, searching multiple bibliographic databases, selecting accurate bibliographic records using MARC matching criteria, creating holdings and item records and reviewing bibliographic records for accuracy.
•    Assists with the bibliographic maintenance of the shared online computer catalog (LINCC).  This includes, but is not limited to, incorporating rule changes, incorporating automation changes, and updating MARC bibliographical, holdings, and item records as needed.
•    Develops and presents programs and activities (in-house and outreach) for library users in area of responsibility.  Solicits and coordinates program presenters from organizations outside the library according to Library’s Long Range/Strategic Plan.
•    Physically processes books and audio/visual materials.
•    Files and maintains statistics on the activities within area of responsibility. 
•    Files and maintains statistics on inter-library loan activity.
•    Consults, as needed, with Library and City staff as well as other Library professionals and outside agencies, including the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative, St. Petersburg College, Tampa Bay Library Consortium, and others to assist with day-to-day issues and problems and to maximize effective communications, service to patrons, and professional working relationships.
•    Represents the Seminole Community Library at conferences and meetings as approved by the Library Director.
•    Attends staff meetings as scheduled.
•    Demonstrates thorough knowledge of all departmental/divisional policies and procedures and the City's Personnel Policies and Procedures.
•    Strives to maximize effective communications and professional working relationships with other Library personnel, other members of the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative, St. Petersburg College, College Center for Library Automation, Tampa Bay Library Consortium, and other members of the professional community with whom contact is made, assigned personnel, and other employees throughout the City.
•    Performs other job-related duties that are consistent with assigned Division responsibilities.


Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited American Library Association (ALA) college or university with a Master's Degree in Library Science. At least one year’s experience in a multiple service library preferred.   Considerable knowledge of the practices, principles, and methods of Library Science and Administration.  Ability to analyze facts and exercise judgment and decision making. Working knowledge of standard computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.).   According to staff assignment, the Librarian II also will possess a reliable knowledge in several of the following areas:  reference and research methods, especially online searching; collection development; reader advisory practices; development and presentation of programs for library users; the Internet and online resources; cataloging and classification; or library automation technology. Ability to serve library users with courtesy, patience, and affability.   Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and professional colleagues within the Division, other employees within other departments of the City, other Cooperative member libraries in Pinellas County, members of the Tampa Bay Library Consortium, volunteers, and patrons of the Seminole Community Library.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:
Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License. 

Physical Requirements:
Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.  Ability to use a computer or other digital devices input tools (keyboard, mouse, trackball, touchpad, etc.)   May require lifting and carrying books and other Library materials weighing up to approximately twenty-five (25) pounds.  Ability to make presentations to small groups of patrons.
