Summary of Job


The Elisha D. Smith Public Library is seeking energetic, passionate candidates for the role of Programming Librarian. In this position you will work with multiple age groups providing hands-on programs utilizing the library’s extensive resources, including our SMITHworks makerspace. In order to help fulfill the library’s mission, we want a professional with a positive attitude, a desire to embrace new ideas, and a sense of humor while working in an environment rich with diversity. 

Makerspace experience is a plus, but a willingness to learn is a must.  


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Provide Customer Service

  • Answer reference and directional questions, both in person and remote.
  • Assist patrons with using technology.
  • Provide reader’s advisory service.
  • Develop, coordinate, and manage library programs.
  • Schedule and manage library displays.
  • Contribute to library website, social media.
  • Place holds for patrons, assist patrons with library card concerns.
  • Check out of materials, sales of Friends of the Library merchandise.
Public Relations
  • Promote library programs and services with flyers, newsletter entries, etc.
  • Advocate for and promote the library.
  • Maintain effective work relationships with others at the library, city, and community organizations.
  • Participate as a member in appropriate civic or service organizations.
  • Provide outreach to community organizations to promote literacy and the library
Library Policies
  • Uphold and enforce all policies established by the Board of Trustees.
  • Strictly adhere to laws and policies regarding patron confidentiality.
  • Articulate policy to the public and staff. 
Report to Supervisor
  • Consult with Supervisor regarding rules and policies.
  • Report on relevant projects, programs, updates.
  • Keep Supervisor apprised of schedule, procedural modifications.
Library Collections
  • Participate in selection, acquisition, processing, display, and circulation of library materials.
  • Adhere to the library’s Collection Development Plan.
  • Maintain awareness of cataloging practices, shelving availability, community focus.
Library Specialization: in addition to the general work duties of a librarian, this position may have specialization in one or more of the following areas. 

Childrens’ Services: Children’s Librarians focus on the youngest members of our community helping families to instill early literacy skills, as literacy develops, they promote and nurture the habit of reading. They work with families to provide parenting education and family literacy programs, design and provide engaging activities that help young people develop their creativity, interests, and talents.

Outreach: Outreach librarians strive to provide equitable delivery of library services to people through the development of programs, policies, practices, and behaviors which make the library available to all people. The outreach librarian(s) develop partnerships and collaborations to better serve their focus population. 
 
Programming: Develops, plans, and implements programs utilizing both traditional and emerging technologies for children, teens, adults, and intergenerational audiences that could be presented in or outside the library that are responsive to community needs while sparking interest, curiosity, and fun, inspiring patrons to embrace their interests and ignite their creativity.
 
Young Adult Services:  The young adult librarian selects materials for the library’s collection with a focus on the demographic they serve. In addition, YA librarians oversee planning activities for teens at the library, which can include both educational and recreational events, such as a summer reading programs, learning activities, movies, and the like. 
 
Other areas of specialization may be developed in collaboration with the library management team based on the staff members skillset and interests provided they assist in furthering the mission of the library. 
 
Management
  • Supervise the building when Supervisors and the Director are out of the building. 
  • Manage all services provided by library department when the Supervisor is out.
  • Focus on customer service, patron/staff safety, accessibility, aesthetics, and cleanliness.
  • Supervise and train library staff and volunteers.
 Project Management
  • Plan and execute middle and long-term projects and programs. 
  • Lead a small team to complete project goals. 
  • Manage resources necessary to complete project.
  • Utilize tools and technology to ensure outcomes. 
  • Perform retroactive review of projects to develop best practices moving forward.
 Skills Development
  • It is expected that librarians will embody the library mission of lifelong learning and set achievable learning goals on a regular basis with their supervisor. 
     


Qualifications


Qualifications, certifications, licenses

  • Master’s degree in library science or the equivalent combination of experience and education. Team members who do not have a master’s degree in library science may be required to complete continuing education course in one or more of the following areas (course fees would be covered by the library): 
  • Familiarity with technology used in the library and the ability to learn new technologies.
  • Familiarity with trends in state, national, and international public libraries.
  • Willingness to learn new skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with coworkers and the public.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English well.
  • Ability to work independently and to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to change work schedule to meet library needs on occasion.
  • Ability to accept, understand, and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn library software.
  • Ability to make decisions in accordance with library policies and regulations.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and use both hands to handle, touch, and grasp; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
  • Specific vision abilities include close and distant vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus.
  • Occasional physical effort, which may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling.
  • Handling, processing and lifting books.
  • Repetitive computer keyboard uses under generally safe and comfortable conditions.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Ability to travel to locations within the city and state.
