Job Purpose

The Librarian II: Branch Manager will provide strategic and functional oversight for the May Memorial Library in Burlington, NC, foster collaborative relationships with employees, peers, and community, create an environment that supports change, encourages progress, and promotes empowerment.   


The May Memorial Branch Manager must possess strong leadership qualities, excellent computer and communication skills, a strong work ethic, knowledge of professional library principles, methods, materials, and practices.  The position is a member of the library leadership team and works closely with other system Branch Managers to support library services, staff, and the Alamance County community. 


Alamance County Public Libraries functions as a department of Alamance County (N.C.) Government.

Responsibilities

  • Opening and closing the library under established procedures;
  • Directly and indirectly supervising branch staff, including monthly preparation of timesheets, evaluate staff performance, takes and implements disciplinary actions, counsels’ staff regarding performance and employee personnel policies, plans of work and continuing education;
  • Participating in hiring for all branch positions;
  • Plan and facilitate branch meetings i.e. bi-annual all staff meetings, quarterly department meetings, and monthly department heads and lead staff meetings;
  • Creating fair and balanced six to twelve-week staff schedules, weekly desk schedules, and annual weekend rotation;
  • Involvement with the City of Burlington as pertains to any issues concerning the library building, maintenance, and other issues that may impact the library, staff or patrons;
  • Handling special requests and patron complaints; enforcing ACPL’s established policies and procedures as needed;
  • Overseeing the planning, coordination and execution of programming at the branch;
  • Planning publicity and public relations for the branch;
  • Collection, formatting and posting monthly statistics online;
  • Working at the branch’s public service desk as scheduled and following established ACPL circulation policies and procedures;
  • Providing bibliographic instruction and readers’ advisory services for library patrons;
  • Promotes good customer service, including public speaking events, tours, and teaching library skills to small groups;
  • Responding to in-house and telephone requests for information from library patrons, including complex reference questions;
  • Researches potential new items for the collection and makes recommendations to the Collection Development Librarian for purchase;
  • Participating in the selection and de-selection of materials for the branch collection;
  • Coordinates, prioritizes, and assigns tasks and projects to direct staff and volunteers, tracks and reviews work progress and activities;
  • Participating on ACPL’s Library Management Team, attending ACPL’s monthly Branch Manager meetings, and other committees as needed;

Qualifications, Education, and Experience Required:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree with 2 to 3 years of professional library experience in a public library with the ability to obtain NC Public Library Certification within six months.
  • OR Some college with 5 or more years full-time experience working in a public library with supervisory responsibilities.
  • Experience with computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database.

An Ideal Candidate Would Also Possess (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Master's Degree in Library Science;
  • Knowledge of Integrated Library Systems Software;
  • Bilingual (Both written and oral fluency in more than one language);


This is full-time, 40 hours per week, benefited position, including evenings and weekends as scheduled.  Travel to multiple library locations within the county is frequent and required.
