Examples of Duties
Oversees and manages the adult services department and all corresponding services, staff and programs
Hires, supervises, trains, evaluates, and schedules staff
Assigns duties for projects and day-to-day activities
Oversees and coordinates the branch’s reference services and initiatives
Compiles, prepares, and maintains reports, records, and statistics for the department
Performs and ensures excellent customer service for complex reference, reader’s advisory and information and technology questions
Proactive reference; answers complex customer questions about information and technology resources
Provides one-on-one instruction/training for customers on an appointment basis
Prepares and presents programs, trainings and classes for adults and all-ages audiences including classes on computer skills, library resources and databases
May host and facilitate book clubs
Resolves intermediate customer complaints; refers more complex issues to branch manager
Knows and enforces rules governing the use of the library
May host and facilitate library book clubs
Staffs the online chat reference service
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in Library Science and one (1) year of professional library experience, preferably including six months of supervisory experience.
Manager Preference: A demonstrated ability to manage a grant-related project with minimal experience is preferred.

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver’s license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library operations
Knowledge of reference procedures; working knowledge of circulation procedures
Knowledge of readers’ advisory methods and sources
Knowledge of current materials, literature and trends, technology and developments in periodicals, newspapers and electronic services in assigned area
Ability to train and supervise work of others
Ability to plan and schedule the workflow of professionals, paraprofessionals and clerical staff
Ability to analyze problems and to recommend practical solutions
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, customers and the community
Ability to perform library functions via automated public catalog and circulation system and implement backup procedures when necessary
Ability to perform basic troubleshooting on library equipment
Ability to plan and provide effective services and programs
Ability to use good judgment in the daily supervision of services
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and customers
Ability to lift and push moderate weight (e.g. 40 pounds of books or other materials and supplies)
