The Lynchburg Public Library is seeking a Collection Development Coordinator

Essential Duties

Examples of Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: 

  • Evaluating and selecting materials for the library's collection in all areas 
  • Lead collection analysis and data-driven assessment activities, including regularly reviewing the Libraries' general holdings in all formats to determine if current resources are meeting the needs of the community and to inform decision-making for collections renewals and purchases.
  • Integrates an understanding of diverse populations and communities into materials selection 
  • Works collaboratively with Acquisitions
  • Collaborate with other librarians in all library locations to identify and acquire new materials for the collection
  • Stay current with industry developments and best practices in collection management, to continuously improve processes and procedures
  • Works with library departments to provide relevant collection-related onboarding to new staff system-wide.
  • Responsible for ensuring that a regular weeding schedule is established and followed for all locations; weeds as required.
  • Runs collection maintenance reports and, with departmental input, assigns staff to specific tasks as needed.
  • Prepares, reviews, and updates collection development policies/procedures and related policies.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of departmental duties and procedures, and fills in and/or assists other departments and locations as needed
  • Engages in professional development through professional library conferences, webinars, seminars, and network committees, reading professional literature, and attending and participating in staff workshops and meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
  • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Directly supervises assigned support and professional staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Minimum Education and Experience Required

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited library school required; minimum 3-5 years of professional library experience in a public library, 3-5 years of experience selecting materials for all age groups, and comprehensive knowledge of current trends and practices in library services.

Other Qualifications

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Second language highly desirable.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
Solid interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution skills, required for working with citizens, vendors, and other City employees.
