Reporting to the Associate Director, Academic Liaison and Special Collections, we are seeking a Librarian for History and Area Studies to actively engage with faculty, students, and staff to develop strong working relationships with the designated departments and programs and provide proactive research support and innovative instruction by connecting faculty and students with library resources in both the general and special collections.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Supports the work of faculty and students in History, History of Science and Technology, and area studies programs to be determined based on the candidate’s education, experience, and interest.
- Analyzes trends in assigned departments and programs’ teaching and research programs to stay abreast of scholarship and scholarly communications in the disciplines themselves and uses this knowledge to create and implement services to support these trends.
- Collaborates and builds partnerships with other liaisons and special collections curators to develop interdisciplinary solutions and create shared practices for integrating distinctive intellectual content and services into the academic environment.
- Builds and manages a distinctive, interdisciplinary, culturally diverse, and responsive research collection in all formats (print, digital, and archival) for both the general and special collections.
- Is knowledgeable about and is able to speak to a wide range of library issues, including scholarly communication, copyright, collection space allocation, digital scholarship, the development of new online tools, and the integration of information literacy skills into the curriculum.
- Broadens access to unique and important collections through physical exhibits and digital project initiatives that expose the collections’ unique resources and engage the community at the broadest level.
- Participates proactively on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams, as well as in the daily activities of the Academic Liaison department, including provision of general research support.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Working knowledge of at least one Western European language.

Note: The referenced salary range is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level.
Minimum Qualifications
- MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or an advanced related Degree.
- Three years professional library experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced Degree in History or related field.
- Experience in an academic or research library.
- Experience with collection development and management for general collections, rare books, and manuscripts.
- Experience developing and delivering innovative instruction and research support services.
