Description
The Role: The Librarian plans, organizes and supervises the activities within a functional program or service division of the library. Functions as supervising librarian on weekends, evenings and as necessary.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science or a related field and two years of relevant library programming experience. Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited university is preferred.

Holiday, Vacation, and Sick Leave: Regular status positions offer:- The City of Glendale observes 10.5 holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave per calendar year to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays.
- Vacation leave accrues at:
- 5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours/17.25* days per year)
- Increases to 6.12 hours after 5 years
- Then caps out at 7.6 hours after 10 years of service.
- Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours/14.25 days* per year).
* Days per year estimates are based on an 8-hour work day.Retirement: - This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
- Contribution is mandatory, and the current contribution rate is 12.27%.
Essential Functions
- Plans, organizes and conducts activities and programs within a library department.
- Provides patron reference and reader advisory services, performs on-line searches; instructs and assists the public and city departments in the use of electronic databases and e-books.
- Develops, interprets and enforces library policies, procedures and regulations; resolves user complaints and problems.
- Performs research, analyzes and compiles information for the library, City departments, agency administrators and educators and the public.
- May create MARC records for complex materials in English and foreign languages for local and international databases and insures the integrity of authority records.
- Develops and administers grants for the library.
- Publicizes and promotes library services, programs and collections.
- Modifies or adds new programs or services based on data analysis.
- Networks with other agencies to provide and obtain materials and services.
- Functions as supervising librarian as needed.
- Develops and implements programs for and with outside agencies.
- Represents the library on committees, councils, professional conferences and meetings.
- Selects materials, evaluates collection, makes decisions regarding purchases and collection maintenance for assigned areas.
- Evaluates donated and damaged materials for disposition.
- Researches and compiles research information on request; develops annotated bibliographies, indices and study guides.
- Participates in the development or revision of library policies and procedures.
- Enforces library policies, procedures and regulations with patrons.
- Conducts library tours, makes presentations to school and community groups both on and off site.
- Participates in the development of long-term library goals and strategies.
- May assist with selecting and training staff, temporary personnel and volunteers.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements/Success Factors
Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science or a related field and two years of relevant library programming experience. Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited university is preferred.
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.

- Exercise initiative in the improvement, development and conduct of library programs
- Develop professional expertise in selected subject areas and library system operations
