Under the direction of the Library Services Supervisor-School Partnerships and through the Office of Programmatic Services, the Children’s Librarian works to provide service that supports the developmental needs of children 0-11 and their parents and caregivers. The Librarian interacts directly with both community organizations and individual readers and learners in and outside the Library, online, and in-person. In the absence of the Supervisor, they may oversee the day-to-day operation of the department or the Librarian may direct and guide the work of the support staff in the Office of Programmatic Services, as well as other staff or volunteers.
The Children’s Librarian helps to create a continuum of service across ages and CLP departments. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to maintain open and fluid communication with internal and external stakeholders. They will have a passion for community engagement and be able to articulate the value of partnering with families to support the literacy and learning needs of their children.
Location: CLP- Office of Programmatic Services, Pittsburgh, PA.
Work Hours: 37.5 hours per week;
Compensation: $22.95 per hour

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Working closely with the Library Services Supervisor-School Partnerships and youth-serving staff in the Office of Programmatic Services and all CLP locations to execute the vision of Children’s Services;
- Working to develop, implement, evaluate, and promote programs that reduce inequitable outcomes for children; including virtual programs, programs in the library, at outreach locations like local schools and non-traditional settings to meet community needs;
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with individuals and agencies serving children and families;
- Providing high quality customer service to all customers in accordance with CLP’s Philosophy and Standards of Service;
- Working to develop rapport with library customers and helping to fulfill their informational and recreational needs by providing quality reference and readers advisory using print and electronic resources;
- Participating in system-wide initiatives, programs, committee work and project management;
- Modeling librarianship for peers; developing skills and abilities of less experienced staff through coaching, engaging in and supporting lifelong learning;
- Using staff and community input, tools and software to inform strategic decision-making; analyzing data to plan services with equity and inclusion in mind;
- Learning, competently using, and demonstrating technology in all forms, including database management and training;
- Assisting the Library Services Supervisor with budget management and other administrative related activities;
- Utilizing and providing feedback about the Library’s dynamic children’s collection in order to ensure that it is representative of the community’s needs;
- Providing meaningful experiences for volunteers;
- Assisting with day-to-day operations of the office;
Education and Physical Requirements
- MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited school;
- Valid PA Driver’s license and reliable transportation required;
- The ability to use a computer screen for long periods of time, at times for a full work day
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities & Experience:
- Previous experience working with children is required;
- Outgoing, dynamic and highly organized individual with a passion for working with children and families and building relationships in the community;
- Demonstrated knowledge and an innovative vision of library services to children and families, especially in regards to equity, diversity and inclusion;
- Knowledge of current trends and issues in and beyond the library arena and the ability to provide a rich and creative understanding of their implications for effective library service;
- Possesses strong leadership skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team to manage assignments and responsibilities effectively in a busy urban library with a diverse public and staff;
- Knowledge of and commitment to best practices in equity, diversity an inclusion; Ability to display cultural competency with peers and the public;
- Previous experience planning and presenting programs for children ages birth to 11 years preferred;
- Experience in using metrics and statistics to assess the effectiveness of services and programs and to determine and measure outcomes and impact;
- Understanding of child development and the ability to apply this knowledge to create developmentally appropriate library experiences;
- Understanding of the importance of family engagement and ability to apply best practices in family engagement;
- Knowledge of media mentorship practices, current technologies, electronic resources and virtual services including social media;
- Familiarity with collection development and ability to recognize current reading, viewing, and listening interests of children and families;
- Commitment to providing high quality customer service in accordance with CLP’s Philosophy of Service;
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments with various levels of staff to facilitate conversations and complete tasks and projects as assigned;
- Excellent communication skills; written and oral;
