Supervisor: Conservation Manager

Summary: Responsible for performing collections preservation duties in the Library & Archives.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Performs a variety of tasks in the Conservation Lab following established procedures and meeting production standards, including photography before and after treatment, fastener removal, surface cleaning, flattening, mending, and constructing custom protective enclosures and exhibit supports.
  • Handles all collection materials carefully and in a manner consistent with preservation policies.
  • Prepares collection materials for rehousing. Take exact measurements of library and archival collection items.
  • Creates custom, acid-free folders/boxes for proper storage, and encapsulating when necessary.
  • Compiles accurate statistics and documentation on work performed.
  • Performs other duties in support of the Conservation Lab including cleaning/tidying and routine maintenance procedures.
  • Participates in team projects, assisting with condition surveys, inspection for pest activities, emergency preparedness, and response to emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree. A degree in History, Art, or other related field will be given preference.
  • Two years of full-time work experience in conservation, bookbinding, or relevant field.

Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Able to work collaboratively, adapt to change, and to be flexible.
  • Able to perform repetitive work tasks with accuracy and attention to details.
  • Able to handle sharp tools and operate heavy equipment (board shears, book presses)
  • Able to handle very delicate items.
  • Be creative in customizing techniques to meet unique archival problems.
  • Able to lift at least forty (40) pounds.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to work collegially are essential.
  • Assists the organization in creating a safe and healthy working environment by working safely with the equipment provided.
  • Follows instructions given for health and safety purposes and immediately reports unsafe working practices or hazardous working conditions.
  • Protects the collections from loss, damage, or theft.

Working Conditions:
  • Exposure to dust and mold possible
  • Some tasks may involve exposure to dust, mold, or light organic solvents requiring the use of a respirator and other personal protective equipment.

Salary: $45,000 annually plus the State of Tennessee Benefits package.
