Description

Summary

Directs the services and operations of one library branch/department. Assures that the branch or department maintains current and retrospective collections in a variety of formats necessary to meet the needs and interests of the community. Has leadership responsibility for developing initiatives that enhance services to the community; training, coaching and directing staff, achieving staff job results; and ensuring that operating requirements are met in professional manner. Uses the principles of community outreach as well as library best practices to provide outreach to meet the needs of the community and goals of the organization. Uses professional knowledge to assist library customers of all ages in the use of library resources. Advises customers in selecting and locating materials to meet their informational educational and recreational needs. Answers and/or facilitates customer reference questions. Promotes reading and life-long learning by planning and conducting programs and presentations both in the library and off-site. Responsible for keeping abreast of building maintenance and public safety needs. Serves as liaison between administration and staff, and staff and community.

  1. Manages the staff, services and operations of assigned branch or department. Provides ongoing supervision, training, mentoring and evaluation of assigned staff.
  2. Provides direct readers’ advisory, reference services, and programming/outreach.
  3. May hold system wide training and mentoring responsibilities.
  4. Resolves customer concerns and serves as liaison between staff, administration and community.
  5. Keeps library collections current and relevant by selecting, organizing, displaying and weeding material.
  6. Fosters a safe, orderly physical environment for customers and staff, conducive for work, study and enjoyment of the library.
  7. Maintains accurate records related to personnel and service issues. 8. Any and all other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Qualifications

  1. Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science preferred -OR-Bachelor’s Degree combined with 7+ years relevant library experience for Librarian 4 classification, 10+ years relevant library experience for Librarian 5 classification, or 15+ years' experience for Librarian 6 or 7 classification required.
  2. Commitment to service excellence.
  3. Several years of professional experience with progressive levels of responsibility.
  4. Ability to supervise and motivate others and provide appropriate guidance and direction to support the Library’s mission and goals.
  5. Knowledge of books and authors, movies and music, as well as current library principles, methods and practices.
  6. Ability to use traditional reference sources, and effectively and efficiently search online databases and the Internet.
  7. Analytic and problem solving abilities to determine appropriate responses based on a customer’s age, needs, and education.
  8. Above average communication skills, both written and verbal, including public speaking skills.
  9. Organizational skills to keep all work current; excellent attention to detail.
  10. Knowledge and ability to use technology employed by the library at a level necessary to instruct and provide support to both public and staff.
  11. Strong knowledge of library policies and procedures.
  12. Nature of work requires an ability to effectively communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents and operate standard business office equipment.
  13. Travel throughout the county for programming/outreach and other library business is required with varying frequency.
  14. Majority of work is performed in a general office / library environment.
  15. Availability for extended or non-traditional hours as needed to perform job duties.
  16. Participation and attendance at promotional events and off-site meetings required.
  17. Able to reach, bend, climb, squat, lift 25lbs, push up to 50 lbs and stand for long periods of time.

Work Schedule

  • Must be willing to work days, evenings, and Saturdays (rotating shifts).
  • Must be willing to work at the various locations throughout our Mahoning County system.
  • Full-time hours are generally 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are generally 24 hours per week, with the option to work additional hours possible.
  • Travel to other library branches required occasionally.
  • Availability for extended or non-traditional hours as needed to perform job duties. Participation and attendance at promotional events and off-site meetings may be required at managements discretion.
