What You'll Be Doing

Serve Your Community as an Adult Services Librarian at Express Library Fayetteville Street! 


Engage directly with Wake County citizens as an Adult Services Librarian, where you'll have the chance to share the magic of the library with the community. From delivering captivating programs, cultivating partnerships with community organizations, offering one-on-one professional services, and working on a service desk, you'll create unforgettable experiences that inspire a lifelong love of reading and learning. Your role will be essential in connecting adults of all ages with the library's resources, fostering relationships and building community. Additionally, this is a new position at the Express Library Fayetteville Street, so you will be working with the branch manager to develop the specifics of the role as you go. 
The Express Library Fayetteville Street is in the process of leaning into existing connections and growing new partnerships to benefit those coming to ELF in the following conditions and circumstances: 

  • Those coming downtown for court or related experiences.  
  • Those coming to ELF as part of a larger program of personal restoration and development. 
  • Those coming to ELF who are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity and are not part of a larger community program. 
  • Those coming to ELF who are neighbors and who’d like to collect their holds, engage in conversations with staff, find something new to read, and have easy return of books from all Wake County Public Libraries facilities. 

We are working towards developing partnerships with organizations both within the structure of the Wake County Government and without to support patrons in these various circumstances, and as an Adult Services Librarian at the Express Library Fayetteville Street, you’ll play an important role in this work. 

Key Responsibilities of an Adult Services Librarian: 

Create Engaging Programs: 

  • Unleash your creativity by designing and implementing dynamic programs for adults of all ages 
  • Create these experiences to spark curiosity and joy 

Build Community Skills:

  • Take pride in meeting one-on-one with adults to assist them in building skills in job searching, doing research, applying for college and more 
  •  Collaborate with community partners to bring new services and resources to library patrons at Express Library Fayetteville Street  

Lead Confidently: 

  • Take charge in the absence of the library managers to ensure the smooth operations of the library 
  • Be a support and resource for your colleagues 

Collaborate with Passion: 

  • Join forces with a dedicated team to brainstorm, plan and execute programs, projects and maintain collections 
  • Contribute your unique strengths while fostering an environment of support, innovation and shared success 

Build Strong Community: 

  • Work with managers and peers to establish and nurture strong relationships with the community 
  • Promote library services and forge relationships that enhance our programs and services 
  •  Work directly with the public providing excellent customer service, reference and readers advisory services

*Downtown employees must pay for parking which is deducted monthly from their paycheck.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Master's degree in Librarianship or related field: MLS, MLIS, MIS, ML from an ALA accredited program or NC program 
  • No specific experience required 
  • Equivalent education and experience are NOT accepted 
  • Please include ALL prior work experience on your application and resume.

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Coursework in adult services
  • One year of professional librarian experience
  • Fluency in a language other than English, especially Spanish
  • Experience developing partnerships with community organizations

Employment Type: Regular

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 9:00am - 6:00pm

Hiring Range: 26.82 - 32.79

Market Range: 26.82 - 38.76
