General Description: Β The Library Assistant, a full-time staff position under the supervision of the Director of Library Services, is responsible for assistance with circulation desk duties, technical processing of library materials, maintenance of displays and bulletin boards, and general office duties where needed. Works closely with the Library Technical Assistant. May be asked to help open or close library. May include evening hours.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:

  1. Circulation duties, including:
    1. Staffing the circulation desk and checking items in/out and renewing items
    2. Creating and maintaining patron records
    3. Shelving of collection items under the LC classification system and regular shelf-reading
    4. Assisting patrons with locating books, resources, etc.
    5. Answering basic questions about the library
  2. Technical processing of library materials:
    1. Preparing items for cataloging, including applying dust jackets, vinylΒ covers, labels, barcodes, pockets, security tags, and other identifying information
  3. Maintenance of displays and bulletin boards, which includes:
    1. Preparing materials
    2. Pulling books for displays
    3. Decorating for season/display
    4. Putting up and taking down displays and boards
    5. Upkeep and organization of display materials
  4. General office duties, including:
    1. Picking up and delivering library mail to necessary locations
    2. General straightening and tidiness of library spaces
    3. Maintaining student supplies table and copier/printer needs
  5. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Library Services


Position Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse educational levels and capabilities. Accurate typing, filing, and shelving skills. Attention to detail is a must. Proficient in a Windows environment; familiarity with Office365/OneDrive is preferred. Ability to undertake concurrent tasks, meet deadlines, and set reasonable goals. Ability to work independently and with supervisor and co-workers in a challenging environment. Outstanding customer service and trouble-shooting skills. Commitment to flexibility in scheduling and assignments.

Minimum Education and Experience:

High School Diploma. Experience in an academic or community college library setting is preferred. Current knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Office365.
