General Summary

The City of Charlottesville is seeking candidates to be considered for the position of Supervising Reference Librarian for the Central Library who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values  of Commitment, Respect, Innovation, and Collaboration.

The preferred hiring range for this position is between $21.03 to $27.34 hourly ($43,742.40 - $56,897.20 annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This position is responsible for supervising Reference Services at a library location and upholding a strong public service orientation. The individual in this role should have a solid understanding of library practices, knowledge of reference resources (including online databases and other internet resources), and familiarity with Windows and Microsoft Office Suite. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, providing reader's advisory and reference services, assisting patrons of all ages with the use of library resources and equipment, performing some circulation tasks and general library duties, assisting with administrative tasks, and may serve as the acting branch manager. Reports to a branch manager.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Answer reader's advisory questions including preparing teacher loans and patron subject requests as assigned; 
  • Assists in collection management;
  • Assists with administrative tasks;
  • Conducts reference interviews in order to interpret questions and identify appropriate response;
  • Implements library policies and procedures associated with public services such as the Internet, meeting rooms, displays, food and cell phone use, etc.;
  • Maintains the collection including noticing gaps and outdated materials, participating in weeding, and planning for space needs and collection arrangement;
  • May assist with some circulation tasks and generals library duties;
  • Manages the department including scheduling, monitoring staff duties, attending meetings, and preparing paperwork;
  • Oversees staff ILL functions at this location 
  • Oversees programming for adults under the supervision of the branch manager;
  • Provides reader's advisory, reference services, and technology assistance to the public and patrons of all ages; 
  • Plans, presents, and promotes library programs for adults;
  • Performs some general department and/or branch duties;
  • Selects materials for the collection;
  • Supervises Reference and Interlibrary Loan services;  
  • Supervises the work of the Reference/Information department staff including hiring, training, and evaluating;
  • Supervises set up, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance of reference computers including software and printers; 
  • Serves as acting branch manager in their absence; 
  • Serves on system-wide committees;
  • Trains staff and public in using electronic resources including conducting workshops, preparing handouts, brochures, and other instructional materials; 
  • Performs other duties assigned;

Education, Experience and Skills



Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Education: M.L.S. degree with certification in Virginia is required
    • Or coursework allowing for the completion of said degree within the first two years of employment.
  • At least 2 years of previous library experience.
  • Experience with MS Office suite and online reference resources.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • At least 2 years of supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
  • Requires good interpersonal and supervisory skills and ability to be an effective team leader; 
  • A strong public service orientation; 
  • Familiarity with automated library systems; 
  • Knowledge of general reference sources and a willingness to read a variety of age-appropriate books to enhance reader’s advisory skills; 
  • Knowledge of and ability to use library's print and electronic resources; 
  • Knowledge of JMRL and national OCLC policies and procedures associated with ILL; Knowledge and ability to manage a library location in the absence of the Branch Manager; Ability to work at a public service desk to provide reference and information assistance; 
  • Ability to demonstrate both electronic resources and other library equipment; 
  • Ability to deal with routine problems and emergencies; 

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Ability to push book trucks and other equipment, lift up to 30 pounds, and to stand, stoop, bend and carry. Contacts would include the branch manager, library staff, library volunteers, and the public.
