Summary
The Librarian provides circulation and reference services both in person and online. The Librarian assists in maintaining the library’s physical and online collections through collection development, specifically by processing and cataloging materials.   The Librarian oversees the library’s website, internal software products, technology, and equipment while serving at the circulation and reference desk.  This position supports patrons’ educational and career goals as well as personal enrichment interests.

Knowledge & Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Includes the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides circulation and reference services both in person and online.
  • Assists in programming, promotion, and outreach efforts of the library
  • Collaborates, evaluates, and continuously improves library instruction and other programming and services
  • Evaluates and recommends the purchase of technology, software, and equipment for the library
  • Facilitates and records the use of interlibrary loans for JCC Library patrons and the community college system at large
  • Partners with the college’s Information Technology department and vendors to procure and install software and hardware
  • Manages the library’s website by performing regular updates to the content and ensuring access to all linked resources and materials
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for Spring Share and its varied applications
  • Collaborates to select and deselect library resources and materials in assigned academic disciplines and sections of the overall collection
  • Involves faculty in the selection of appropriate materials and resources that lead to students’ courses success
  • Manages the library’s physical and online collection by cataloging, classifying, and entering new materials into the automated circulation system
  • Works with the NC Community College Systems Office for complex and original cataloging
  • Investigates technologies that will improve services and employs available instructional technology, when appropriate.
  • Participates in professional development to further knowledge regarding the field of library science
  • Supports the total mission of the college through the attendance of various college functions and encourages support of the college’s programs, policies, and procedures
  • Serves on college committees as assigned
  • Presents at professional conferences and engages with outside professional organizations
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum & Preferred Qualifications

Education Minimum: A master's degree in library science or library and information science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school.
Experience Minimum: None
Experience Preferred: Three years of experience as a librarian and/or K-12 media coordinator

Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have experience in library management systems and should be proficient with Microsoft Office products.
