Required Degree: 

ALA-accredited master's degree in Library Science (or other master's or doctoral degree, in which case the candidate must earn a library science degree within 44 months of hire)

Experience: 

Five or more years of successful experience in progressively responsible managerial or administrative positions in librarianship, the library industry, or higher education

Duties/Expectations: 

Mentoring: All library faculty are expected to contribute significantly to an education that is spiritually strengthening, intellectually enlarging, and character building and that leads to lifelong learning and service by mentoring students. This will take place through integration with citizenship and/or within one or more of the three areas of professional assignment. Faculty are specifically encouraged to “strive to involve and mentor students in their scholarly research.” (Rank and Status Policy 3.3)

Some ways in which faculty may mentor students are suggested in section 3.1.1 of the approved library version of the Rank and Status Professional Faculty Review Procedures.
 

Citizenship (5 – 10%): All library faculty are expected to:

  • Support and further the mission of the university and the Aims of a BYU Education.
  • Adhere to the university’s Church Educational System Honor Code and observe university policies.
  • Exhibit honor, integrity, collegiality, civility, respect, and concern for others.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to creating an atmosphere of unity and belonging at the university.
  • Attend department, division, and library meetings, and annual commencement.
  • Attend and encourage students to attend devotionals and forums.
  • Participate in the intellectual life of the department, library, and university.
  • Participate in citizenship (e.g., committee service), leadership (e.g., administrative service), and governance (e.g., participation in hiring and rank and status processes) activities within the department, library, and university.
  • Serve the profession, including holding offices and committee assignments in professional associations, organizing professional conferences and panels, editing journals or newsletters, serving on editorial boards, reviewing grant proposals, or serving as scholarly referees.

Ways in which faculty members may demonstrate citizenship—particularly with respect to c, d, g, and h—are found in section 3.2.2.B through H of the approved library version of the Rank and Status Professional Faculty Review Procedures.

Professional Assignment: Professional Duties (70 – 75%) 

Demonstrate effectiveness in specified professional responsibilities within:Library and division leadership

  • Contributing to the development and fulfillment of long-term strategic directions for the BYU Library.
  • Participating in planning and directing all library programs.
  • Fulfilling responsibilities and obligations of the University Librarian as requested by the University Librarian.
  • Providing vision and establishing high-level strategy for the Research and Learning Division.
  • Providing leadership and direction to the departments and units of the Research and Learning Division.
  • Developing, identifying, monitoring, and applying (as appropriate) best practices in academic and research librarianship/higher education that support the library’s and university’s strategic priorities.
  • Providing oversight of all functions in the Research and Learning Division.
  • Providing leadership in resolving conflicts of process, policy, priorities, etc.
  • Communicating with division employee constituencies and representing their concerns to the senior leadership team while maintaining a holistic view of library operations.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with key university administrators and faculty.
  • Encouraging collaboration, innovation, and partnerships within the Library, on campus, and beyond.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues in external library consortia such as the Consortium of Church Libraries and Archives, Utah Academic Library Consortium, Greater Western Library Alliance, and national associations.

Resource stewardship

  • Participating with the senior leadership team to ensure that library and university resources are appropriately allocated and effectively utilized.
  • Participating in the annual strategic resource planning, preparation, and reporting process.
  • Providing stewardship for the fiscal and physical resources allocated to the division.

Personnel administration

  • Ensuring that university and library personnel policies and procedures are understood and successfully implemented.
  • Initiating and participating in formal training programs for new employees and fostering continuing education/professional development opportunities for all division non-student employees.
  • Participating in faculty hiring as outlined in library hiring procedures.
  • Supporting division faculty librarians as they progress through the stages of faculty development (e.g., pre-CFS, advancement to senior librarian) to assist them in being effective librarians throughout their careers.
  • Conducting goal-setting and annual stewardship interviews with division department chairs and unit heads and writing annual performance reviews of these personnel.
  • Addressing performance issues of division personnel directly (including instituting progressive discipline as appropriate) and assisting department chairs or unit heads to do so within their stewardships.
  • Participating in merit raise compensation decision-making.

Set and accomplish relevant goals within university citizenship, mentoring, and all professional assignments.

Achieve appropriate quantity and quality of work in specified professional duties.

Use sound judgment in decision-making.

Manage personnel and budgetary resources effectively.

Participate on the Executive Administrative Council, Administrative Council, and other committees as assigned specifically to this position.

Professional Assignment: Professional Development (5 – 10%)

Stays abreast of issues, trends, and scholarship in academic librarianship, administration, higher education, and the functions/services within direct stewardship.

Professional Assignment: Scholarship (10 – 15%)

Demonstrate consistent production of high-quality scholarship products that

  • Are a natural outgrowth of performance in the professional assignment.
  • Serve to strengthen the librarian’s expertise in library science, leadership, and/or areas of stewardship.
  • Involve students where possible.
