The Pollak Library at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure-track Education Librarian to join our dedicated community of librarians, staff, and student assistants.

The University
California State University, Fullerton is the largest of 23 campuses, which comprise the California State University system. The campus is located in northern Orange County, convenient to numerous cultural and recreational sites throughout Southern California. As a comprehensive university, CSUF offers 110 degree programs - 55 undergraduate and 55 graduate, credential programs for teachers, and doctoral degrees in education (Ed.D.) and nursing practice (DNP). The Library
We serve more than 40,000 students as well as approximately 4,000 faculty and staff. Our website, http://www.library.fullerton.edu, is a vital component of the Library’s extensive instruction program and serves as a gateway to library resources that include 1.6 million books, government documents, and audiovisual materials; over 230,000 periodicals available electronically or in print; and over 400 electronic databases. The staff includes 20 FTE librarians, 27 FTE paraprofessionals, and 57 student assistants. Reference and instruction librarians teach an average of 800 instruction sessions per academic year and maintain one of the busiest reference services operations in the CSU system.


The College of Education
The College of Education is committed to the preparation and professional development of innovative and transformative educators who advance just, equitable, and inclusive education. As a professional community of scholar-practitioners, the College of Education promotes creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking as fundamental to student achievement and success in a diverse and interconnected world. The College of Education has departments and programs in the following subject areas: educational leadership, elementary & bilingual education, instructional design & technology, literacy & reading education, secondary education, and special education. It offers an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, numerous Masters of Science, Certificate, and Credential programs. In addition, the Center for Careers in Teaching serves as the student success center for future teachers. Position
The Education Librarian serves as the subject specialist and liaison to the College of Education’s dynamic and diverse group of students and faculty, providing instruction, reference, and outreach. A strong understanding of the teaching profession and/or education curriculum (credential process, pedagogical methods, etc.) is expected. The successful candidate will teach specialized library instruction sessions, both in-person and virtually. The Education Librarian provides in person and online individual research consultations with Education faculty and students. The position includes collection development duties including selecting education, instructional media, and juvenile collection materials, and overseeing the library’s state-adopted curriculum materials collection (LRDC). The Education Librarian serves on the Donoghue Children’s Literature Center Board, organizes the annual Donoghue Children’s Literature Lecture, and collaborates on other education and children’s literature-themed exhibits and events.


The Education Librarian also participates in general reference and instruction services (e.g. reference desk hours, both in-person and virtually, and general library instruction sessions) and creates and maintains research guides, including LibGuides, on specific topics and for classes as needed. Librarians at CSUF have faculty status and are expected to meet promotion and tenure requirements, including scholarly/professional and service activities as outlined in Library Department Personnel Standards.


Responsibilities



  • Participate in the Library’s extensive instruction program by planning, teaching, and assessing faculty-requested library instruction sessions

  • In collaboration with the reference team of librarians, provide research assistance to the campus community via in-person and virtual research consultations and scheduled reference shifts

  • Perform subject liaison roles for all disciplines in the College of Education and develop collaborative relationships with its faculty

  • Work with the Collection Development and Management Librarian to identify and select materials in subject areas, and consult on accreditation reports

  • Create and maintain online Education instructional materials and content for the library website

  • Take part in scholarly/creative activities and serve on department, library, professional, and university committees, as part of the required tenure and promotion process


Required Qualifications



  • Master’s degree in library and/or information science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent institution by the time of appointment

  • Educational background or demonstrated expertise in any of the disciplines in the College of Education (Elementary, Secondary, Special, Literacy/Reading, Bilingual, Ed Leadership, Instructional Design/Tech)

  • Knowledge and experience with discipline-specific information databases and other research resources

  • Experience in research assistance via in-person, virtual reference, consultations, and teaching information literacy in higher education or comparable area

  • Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

  • Ability or expertise supporting a diverse environment with co-workers, students, faculty, and the wider campus community

  • Evidence of, or interest in, the pursuit of scholarly, creative, and professional activities

  • Ability to balance core librarian duties with scholarly, creative, and professional growth activities and service

  • Availability to work occasional weeknights and weekends  


Preferred Qualifications



  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Education (or equivalent degree leading to a teaching credential) and/or significant experience in Education (applying learning theories and varied pedagogical approaches, knowledge of the scholarship of education, knowledge of California state-adopted curriculum materials, school leadership, etc.)

  • Experience using current and multi-modal technologies to design, implement, and teach engaging learning activities   

  • Experience with supporting both postbaccalaureate and graduate students

Compensation
The Senior Assistant Librarian 12-month classification salary range is $6,788 to $14,487. The anticipated hiring range is $6,853 to $6,987 per month. A 10-month appointment is also an option.  


Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm).
