GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
Employees in this position can be responsible for a wide range of library duties. While all will perform circulation, reference, and reader’s advisory services, they will also have an area of specialty that includes: collection development, early literacy programming, and outreach programming.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Performing circulation services including greeting patrons, checking materials in and out of the library, shelving library materials, issuing library cards, processing library reserves and collection and recording of payments. Assists with opening and closing the library.
• Planning, promoting, and implementing library programs. This includes storytimes, summer reading events, outreach events, and more.
• Providing effective reference and readers' advisory services.
• Manage programming and book budget for early literacy services.
• Responsible for marketing programs and services to the media and the public.
• Coordinate with the Director on grant applications and requests for donations and gifts supporting youth services and programs at the library.
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of library databases and electronic resources and devices and assists patrons in these areas when needed.
• Providing collection development duties including selection and deselection of all types of library materials.
• Preparing new materials for circulation.
• Providing outreach services to the library community.
• Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Typical Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma required. Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree in Library Science preferred.
Prior library experience preferred.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Skill in verbal and written communication.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to use alphanumeric order.
CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Skill in identification, analysis, explanation, open-mindedness, and problem-solving.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Drivers License.
SOFTWARE SKILLS REQUIRED
Basic: Works proficiently with basic computer software and can become proficient with Integrated Library System (ILS), Apollo. Ability to gain a working understanding of current and developing technologies as they relate to public library operations and services. Examples of software used in library: Microsoft Office products, Canva, WhoFi, and Apollo.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS
No supervision.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR FUNDS, PROPERTY and EQUIPMENT
Regularly responsible collecting and processing payments. Almost continuous care and attention is required when handling funds, property, and equipment to prevent loss.
ACCURACY
Attention to detail and accuracy when performing tasks are essential to the efficient operation of the library. It is possible for errors to go undetected for a considerable period which could cause further errors, losses, or embarrassment to the organization.
ACCOUNTABILITY
This position is accountable to and reports to the Librarian and Assistant Librarian. Must be a self-starter, able to work independently with minimal supervision. Time management skills are necessary.
PUBLIC CONTACT
Daily contacts with patrons, either within the office or in the field. Must have the ability to establish positive working relationships with patrons. May also involve occasional self-initiated contacts to patrons. Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgement in handling information and records is essential. Must be able to network with local businesses and community members to foster partnerships with the library.
EMPLOYEE CONTACT
Ability to develop positive working relationships with co-workers. Ability to work independently or as part of a team depending on task. Often work in coordination with employees in other departments and organizations.
USE OF MACHINES, EQUIPMENT AND/OR COMPUTERS
Ability to use a copy machine, fax machine, telephone, computers, printers, scanners, and Square.
WORKING CONDITIONS
• Primarily works indoors in an office setting
• Subject to frequent low-level inside office noise
• Subject to working with patrons, staff of other departments, community members
• Subject to standing and walking for extended periods of time without a break
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
• Walking, bending, stooping, standing; part of every workday is standing and moving about the library
• Finger dexterity enough to operate equipment such as a personal keyboard, cleaning, and shelving books
• Near vision enough to read and review computer screens and printing on/in books
• Speech and hearing enough to communicate clearly and distinctly in person and by telephone and in person
• Primarily indoor climate working in an office setting
• Flexible enough to use hands and arms to grab, hold, reach, etc.
• Strength to lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.; frequently lift and/or move up to 10-15 lbs

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The employee must be customer service oriented, possess good communication skills and enjoy working in a team environment. Knowledge of the local community is helpful. Work schedule includes any days/hours the library is open.
